Over the last 20 years, the dramatic elements of contemporary political administration have shown the ascent to power of mediocrity. If the people could take care of themselves and find balance, it wouldn’t matter all that much, but the cynical, utterly final judgments made in their name offer little room for reversal. At the best of times, there is less political will to address the corruption or deprive the offenders of riches and power, while unprecedented levels of corruption at the core of institutions clog courtrooms at taxpayer cost. Animal cruelty is only a byline for amusement in Spain, a country known for its extreme socioeconomic inequities and excessive corruption (whatever that implies!).
