RISING INCIDENCE OF POLITICAL SCANDALS

The news seems to be filled with political scandals all the time these days, and there’s no indication that this trend will end anytime soon. The public’s patience and trustworthiness toward their elected representatives have been steadily declining, and many people have given up on the possibility that an honest politician who prioritizes the needs of the people would ever emerge. The problem is not limited to scandals; there are often backdoor transactions and other activities that stay under the radar because they are never discovered. It may be annoying to be stuck in Washington and the political system, particularly because choosing new representatives seems to be pointless. Political controversies are difficult to describe precisely. Though there are some general guidelines, there are no strict standards for what constitutes a political scandal. Anything that is made public that seems to entail breaching the law will, as you may expect, quickly spark a significant political controversy. Sexual scandals are also rather prevalent, especially involving former president Bill Clinton and Representative Anthony Weiner. Their respective sexual scandals quickly gained national attention and escalated into significant political issues. However, the definition of a political scandal may be wide and include a wide range of possible behaviors, whether or not they are unlawful. It’s not always necessary for something to be illegal for it to become a scandal, but it usually is. Political scandals are generally understood to be anything that a politician would want the public to be ignorant about while they are in power and which ultimately finds its way into the public domain. Information leaks that were not intended for public consumption have become a more frequent political controversy in recent years. There have been many scandals; in fact, a quick internet search for political scandals would provide lengthy lists of national, state, and municipal scandals that have occurred this year. 2014 has already seen some talk about the several scandals involving governors and, of course, Obama. It’s difficult to argue against the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, being referred to as a scandal given the amount of controversy surrounding it. Obama is said to have known that the website would eventually crash and that individuals would lose their insurance, but he nonetheless pursued his own political goal. However, it would be dishonest to single out Obama since officials from both parties have engaged in unethical behavior.
