Retaining the story of the 380 square meter site, the new KSM Architecture Design Studio is a paragon of the practice’s ideas. It is climatically sensitive, ecologically sustainable, and fits wonderfully in the midst of Chennai’s developing commercial district. The site, which faced east and was located on a street that was characteristic of India, already included a temple that was 35 years old and four trees. The bright and colorful temple stands in contrast to the earthy and rustic colors of the studio, while the trees provide shade against the harsh environment. Each component contributes to the design in its own unique way. The studio is a straightforward volumetric play of masses, a container-like building with two stories that is situated within the context of the existing site story. It displays architectural drawings that are shown directly from the roadside. In addition to having a texture and visual quality that is almost lyrical, its exterior is covered in a unique skin that is capable of preserving itself and coping with the weather. In order to reduce the glare that occurs in the morning and afternoon, bamboo curtains made of chopped bamboo culms and steel rods are used to construct the eastern and southern facades. These curtains also provide a lovely chiaroscuro effect within the building. In addition, the screen attracts the predominant southern air, which helps to ventilate the workplaces, and it also serves as a dust trap. Wind catchers that are powered by motors improve the flow of the surrounding breeze. On the western side of the building, a bio-wall that is covered with evergreen Passionflower creepers works as a heat insulator, while a bio-canopy of evergreen, indigenous Jasmine creepers shadows the glass doors that are located along the northern side. The openings, which are limited in number, are strategically positioned, deep set, and engineered to allow for optimal temperatures inside the interior. The whole of the building is protected by a polyfill roofing slab that is topped with a layer of tiles that have a high solar-reflective index. This serves to insulate the interior area. On the terrace, there is a café that is covered by an inclined bamboo roof that provides shade and allows a pleasant wind from the sea to enter the studio via top-hung apertures. Skylights that are arranged in trapezoidal cones allow diffused light to enter the studio room. Rainwater is collected over areas of the yard that are covered in pervious concrete beds. Rainwater, natural light, and wind are all factors that are skillfully used in the design. Utilizing resources in a strategic manner and employing passive design strategies are two methods that significantly enhance the interior environment while simultaneously producing a pleasant harmony of textures. Once inside, the different masses come together to form a single volume, and a sensation of oneness and togetherness begins to spread across the space. Five distinct floors, each of which was erected on each side of a central void, were used to effectively house the many purposes of the architectural and engineering firm. These functions included a library, a workshop, and a workstation for the key designers. A rhythmic connection between the floors is provided by a sequence of stairs that are both straight flight and split-spiral in design. The native Tandur stone, pinewood shuttered concrete, and steel pieces all contribute to the enhancement of the experience via its visual and sensory tactile qualities. Even the furniture, which included sleek concrete workstations, shelves made of pinewood and piping tubing, and seats with pops of color, were able to blend in really well with the area.
