Photography by ar. aniket bhagwat; used with permission from the architect “the concept of identity in rapidly developing metropolitan areas is a challenging one. “the new urbanity of india has no soul, no character, and no sense of identity,” says ar. aniket bhagwat as he continues to educate us on this unsettling fact… It is arguable, he says, that there is no easy way to deal with both the magnitude and the speed of the situation in any other manner. Either we should construct at a slower pace, or we should construct fewer things; or maybe there is a third option, one that has not been explored up to this point. How can one locate the expression of the human spirit, construct a notion of identity, and more simply create a smile to people’s faces in the new displaced urbanity that they name houses, till we find a better way to build? Our studio was recently presented with a modest space that was 3,700 square meters and was located in the midst of 500 flats that were designated as middle-income housing. The buildings are constructed with the exactitude of a military operation, and in the space between them was a slender, elevated strip on which automobiles were parked. We have designed the area in a series of fractals that appear to be disconnected from one another. We envisioned a series of events that were not connected to one another but were meant to flow seamlessly into one another. Each area has its own unique personality, its own story, and its own aesthetic. It is almost as if there are a lot of happy, intelligent people in an animated room all holding hands. At the lower end of the design is a green court that is reached by an entry path that is surrounded by trees and has water at its side. This walkway leads to a plaza that has massive trellis structures. It was separated from the rest of the composition by a hidden water court that had cool caverns, and this, in turn, concealed away and created a separation with a number of active play places and a tiny amphitheater. The whole collection of rooms are encircled by a walking path that runs around the perimeter of the structure and is interspersed with nooks and crannies with benches. Each of the space compositions was constructed by hand using elaborate techniques, and each of the spaces include a collection of installations that serve as identifiers. The gigantic trellis structures, of which there are a total of four with the longest one measuring 35 meters in length, are expertly crafted; each piece is differently assembled; tilting and weaving in itself; the lattice forms many different textures of light; and they keep the sun from shining on the main court. This composition may be accessed after a short stroll through a grove of trees that is marked by a hand-crafted fountain made of copper and brass that sits at the entrance to the forest. The sculpture by Vyom serves as the focal point of the garden court. A variety of metals, including copper, brass, and steel, were hand-beaten into the shape of petals to create the entry fountain. The court of caverns and the gigantic dinosaur measuring 32 meters in length may be seen from a direction that is separate from the main court. This animal’s head pushes its way into the court of the caverns, which creates a stitch between the two open areas. Over the course of time, the court will develop towering clumps of bamboo, and the pond will become populated with lotus flowers and fish. The caverns provide for peaceful getaways due to the fact that their ceilings are covered with grass. The project is now in the final stages of completion. However, first responses have been intriguing to observe: the dinosaur seems to inspire enthusiasm in both youngsters and adults. A great friend who came with her children could not help but check out the slide while they were there. Just a few seconds before, the customer, who was generally a serious guy, had already hurriedly tested out the slide when he believed that no one was looking. It is something to be proud of. People who used to come on the weekends to exhibit their new apartments to their friends and family now simply spend time in the garden; people speak about spending time outside in this place, and everyone who has worked on it or visits it has a joyous look in his or her eyes. It’s still early, but the news thus far is encouraging…. caption for dinosaur is a bridge, a slide, ladders, and swings and a joyful play structure, where many people’s imaginations may run amok. dinosaur is a big dinosaur.
