As a long-time practitioner, I can honestly say that I have never once had the impression that the things I counsel on or teach are in any way connected to the generally recognized standards for occult techniques. Despite this, I do not feel threatened by other activities, even if they are often referred to be occult. Some people classify divination practices such as reading tea leaves and tarot cards as “the occult,” with the implication that doing so makes one susceptible to the influence of Satan or another malevolent power. Tea leaf reading and tarot card reading are both perfectly innocent forms of divination. My own preference is to refer to these activities as just metaphysical disciplines. The findings of recent scientific research are now confirming the existence of a continuum of consciousness (mind) that exists outside of the physical brain. Many forms of divination simply serve as a platform from which one might tune into one’s own mind, as well as the mind’s relationship to the environment and what Ralph Waldo Emerson referred to as the “oversoul.” Something that is simply accepted as being “symbolic” may, in fact, be more real than what we now know or are able to establish. In contrast to placebos, feng shui modifications have a proven track record of being effective regardless of whether or not people believe in it. It may be difficult for me to maintain objectivity if I write an article that investigates the subject; yet, one of my goals is to dispel some of the myths that exist inside and about our industry. In many different societies, practices and beliefs that are not indigenous to that community and do not represent its core values are looked with mistrust. This is because none of these factors determines where the practice or belief originated. In the case of feng shui, I believe that individuals are deprived of the potential advantages that they stand to earn from this ancient body of knowledge due to misplaced distrust. When removed from their original setting, the rituals and ideas of feng shui might come off as esoteric and occult-like. Nevertheless, the yin-yang sign has been connected to binary coding as well as the orbit of the earth around the sun. It was noted in one of the articles that I read on the internet that feng shui seemed to be similar to numerology. Although it is true that we have a great deal of symbols and coded language, I do not think that the number annotations have any more of a connection to the occult than the periodic table of elements does. We communicate verbally and in writing via the use of symbols and numerical coding since this is the standard shorthand for our field. Despite the fact that the symbols and coded language condense observations of nature and the laws of physics, this body of information, which dates back thousands of years and started as a body of knowledge, is nonetheless cloaked in mystery, mythology, and in some instances superstition. In spite of the fact that the luo-shu and ba’gua seem to have the marks of a talisman, their primary function was that of a hand-held calculator. Feng shui methods are not the same as magic or witchcraft; rather, they focus on gaining an awareness of our natural and man-made environments and adjusting one’s behavior to work with rather than against the natural currents that are there. Psychologists who study the environment often arrive at the same judgments. An article published on the internet put an excessive amount of stress and suspicion on the number of practitioners who claim to be “masters.” The title of “master” originates from the older parts of the globe and just serves to recognize a specific degree of training and ability. Modern day colleges and universities are also able to confer the title, such as a master’s degree in the field of economics or philosophy. In a different setting, we may refer to someone who has achieved the rank of black belt in karate as a master of martial arts. This does not imply that those who hold the title “master” possess psychic or otherworldly abilities. To put it another way, a “master” is not synonymous with a “sorcerer.” Moreover, the so-called “gurus of Wall Street” are not, in fact, actual gurus. Even if a master of feng shui were to advise that finding dead birds on your front porch on a regular basis is a bad omen, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may come to the same conclusion. If a master suggests that it is not a good idea to live in a home that is lower than the sea level, then f.e.m.a. could agree with them. Even if the most of our hypotheses are grounded in common sense, the bulk of them have simply not been confirmed by western scientific research. We are aware that the past tends to repeat itself, and we are also aware that there are many patterns in nature that may be predicted with a high degree of accuracy. In order to arrive at findings that have stood the test of time, we practitioners rely from both the implicit and explicit rules that may be found in nature. If getting signals from mother nature can be considered “occult,” then a good deal of predicting that is based on science might also be considered to be “occult.” kartar diamond is the author of a number of publications, one of which is titled “feng shui for skeptics: actual answers without superstition.” Diamond is also a practitioner of traditional feng shui.
