Between Spaces Architects skillfully manipulate space in a duplex located in Bangalore, with the goal of creating an urban atmosphere that is characterized by unexpected elements… With cities resembling concrete jungles and room sizes shrinking by the day; with balconies now a rare sight, and typical layouts being replicated en masse, irrespective of amenities and neighbourhoods, the onus of the inward-looking home lies on reinventing interior design and décor; customising it to the homeowners and their evolving lifestyle. One of these duplexes was recently created by Between Spaces Architects and may be seen in the suburbs of Bangalore. They wanted their house to reflect their youthful and lively personalities while still being minimalist and free of clutter. The homeowners were a young urban couple who wanted their home to reflect their characteristics. As if on cue, the design delivers with an additional dash of timeless appeal and an efficiency that it extracts from a regulated material and color palette. Both of these elements contribute to the overall design. Ingenuity in design mandates a plan that connects the living area, which already has double-height walls, to the city outside via double-height windows, so enabling natural light to enter the space. Making strategic civil alterations allows the kitchen to flow effortlessly with the living-dining area, which ensures that there is enough space. On the other hand, the double-heighted entryway, which turned out to be a no-added-value proposition owing to its limited area, is reduced to the usual height thanks to the walk-in closet that was made at the top level employing this space. Furthermore, its wall is pushed back towards the kitchen, which is just enough to make the entryway seem like it has a reasonable amount of space. Once one enters the apartment, one is immediately confronted with an unusual design element: a blue wall and ceiling jamb that is covered in fabric. This jamb conceals the shoe cabinet and maintains its presence within the apartment by acting as paneling and also by painting the wall of the staircase. At the same time as this stunning turquoise blue creates an atmosphere of eclectic elegance, it finds the ideal companion in black veneer, which is then balanced by subtle traces of light brown teak veneer. The engineered walnut wood flooring draws attention to the expansiveness of the living and dining areas, while the gypsum fake ceiling with cove lighting serves to link the dining area with the open kitchen. The use of chalkboard paint, tinted glass, quartz countertops, and the refurbishment of the staircase railing that now features a mild-steel paint-finished railing with toughened glass with Pinewood lining on top are all examples of the inventiveness that can be found in the smaller details. For example, the door sizes of the adjacent powder room and bedroom are different, and they are concealed by the black veneer. Another example is the glass partition that separates the walk-in wardrobe from the master bedroom. Stylish in its innovative, restrained approach, the house is the ideal canvas that delights as it awaits growth. The home’s minimalist palette, without the typical colorful soft furnishings, brings the home to life in a way that is both invigorating and chic.
