The unique design of the brand-new cruise port in Mumbai will be one of the many visual pictures that the international visitor will take with them when they return home from their trip to India… When the existing facility at Ballard Pier is replaced by Mumbai’s brand-new international cargo shipping and passenger cruise terminal in 2019, the city is well on its way to becoming the cruise capital of India. This project, which was begun by the Mumbai Port Trust, is being directed by Planet 3 Studios, a multidisciplinary design studio. The project’s goal is to create a space that is both aesthetically and operationally comparable to worldwide transportation hubs. It was first envisioned as a project for renovation, but today it is being built from the ground up with retail zones, banquet facilities, and restaurants that provide breathtaking views of the bay of Mumbai for the whole complex. The purpose of these high-quality facilities, which are available to cruise passengers as well as the general public, is to promote water transportation in order to bring in more financial aid for the port trust. When the structure reaches a height of 237 meters, it takes on a linear constructed shape, which is then broken into smaller vertical shards that break up the monotony of its linearity. Restrictions imposed by the Navy and the Coastal Regulation Zone determine the height and scale of the rectilinear structure, while the southwest-facing facade of the back of the building is optically shut. The newly constructed port is located at Indira Dock, which is one of the three wet docks in the city. It is surrounded on one side by water and on the other side by the navy. The building makes use of a material palette that includes glass, reinforced concrete, tensile fabric, and double-glazed glass. It does this by drawing inspiration from its aquatic surrounds and capitalizing on the openness of the site. Not only does it have a flowing appearance, which is suggestive of waves that are crashing on the shore, but it also has a similarity to the sails that are used on ships. However, the design of the facade is more than simply a visually pleasing landmark; the characteristics of the sun’s path, climate management, and wind velocity, which were established using parametric software, all affect the design of the famous facade. Taking into account the fact that cruise ships leave the port in the evening, the building takes on an entirely different personality after sunset as a result of the lighting design that enhances the facade. The flashy new port not only alters the way public buildings are regarded in the city, but it also gives Mumbai a new waterfront symbol, which allows it to capitalize on the possibilities of an underutilized eastern shoreline.
