Fukuoka is an urban and green city with a modern exterior that is grounded in the architecture of old Japan. The architectural work of Masahiko Sato, known as “shell,” is a residential development that exemplifies the spirit of the area in which it is situated, which is close to the city of Fukuoka. The fundamental objective of the design was to provide the convicts with a sense of solitude and safety while simultaneously lowering the overall decibel level, which is why the facility is located in a residential area yet its northernmost point is exposed to traffic. The house is a straightforward combination of white and umber tones, and the majority of its construction is comprised of wood, the natural grains of which provide an air of whimsy to the building. The residence benefits from having huge window cutouts in order to gaze outdoors. Although there are no openings in the outside wall on the north side of the building, there is a cozy courtyard along the south wall that facilitates communication between the inside and exterior of the building. The living rooms are planned to open out onto the courtyard, bringing the appropriate amount of the vivacity and sunlight typical of the humid subtropical region into the house. The contrast between the white walls and the hardwood floor and ceiling elevates the overall look, making it seem as if it were constructed like a work of great art. The staircase and the girders that are hung halfway contribute to the spatial vocabulary since they cut across the volume of the space in the living area that is contained inside the building. The fa\u00e7ade of the house has the same composition of white and umber, which gives it a trendy and urbane appearance. While the floor plan is straightforward and open, light plays a significant role in dressing up the interiors with strategic chiaroscuro elements that alternate between highlighting the architectural details and that of the interiors. The home has five large bedrooms and is spread across two levels over a built-up area of approximately 200 square meters with parking for two cars.
