In addition to being the recipient of the Danish Aluminium Prize for its aluminium exterior, the campus building is distinguished by its distinctive and forward-thinking design, which combines form, function, sustainability, energy, and internal climate in a synthesis. “In this particular setting, the facade assumes a significant function,” explains Professor Per Heiselberg, who serves as the head of the jury, in response to the awards ceremony. The solar shading system is comprised of around 1,600 triangular shutters made of perforated steel. These shutters are positioned on the fa\u00e7ade in such a manner that they are able to respond to differing levels of sunshine intensity and the amount of light that is wanted to enter the building. After being closed, the shutters are positioned such that they are parallel to the fa\u00e7ade. They protrude from the facade when they are open as requested, and when they are completely open, they give the building a look that is quite expressive. The shutters of the solar shading system are mechanically controlled by a tiny motor, and the system is equipped with sensors that continually monitor the levels of light and heat. The dynamic operations of the facade are a significant factor in the victory. “the facade is dynamic and adapts itself to the climatic conditions and use patterns in order to guarantee that the daylight conditions are optimal.” Additionally, it highlights the building’s environmental image while simultaneously preserving a suitable inside temperature in the rooms that are located along the front. There is an exhilarating shine in the facade that is provided by the perforation, which can be observed from both the exterior and the interior. In the evening, when the fa\u00e7ade is lighted from inside, it seems more translucent, which makes it possible to become aware of the activities that are taking on within. According to Heiselberg, the fa\u00e7ade has a role in facilitating a “conversation” between the interior life of the building and the spectator who is now outside the building.
