Axelrod Architects takes a Tel Aviv property that was glitzy in the 1980s and changes it into a home that is contemporary and stylish… Irit Axelrod, Principal of Axelrod Architects, is in charge of the transformation of a single-family home in Tel Aviv that is 5500 square feet in size and has two stories. The goal of the transformation is to reflect the homeowners’ love of tranquility and sleek modern design, as well as the firm’s vision of modern residential architecture. In order to accommodate their indoor-outdoor lifestyle, the new homeowners wanted to renovate an existing house that was built in the 1980s. Their family life is now centered on a lushly manicured courtyard that is located just outside of their living-dining room. The home was designed by Axelrod Architects to revolve around a new “Black Core,” which is a glass elevator with a glossy black finish that links the living areas below to the private bedroom areas above. Additionally, the living area extends up to the bedroom level with open balconies and a double-height ceiling, while also exposing out to the natural environment via sliding glass doors that are transparent. By tucking away an open reading and media room on the upper floor, the family is able to see one other while yet having the opportunity to locate a quiet spot for leisure. A sleek modernist facade is presented to the quiet and upscale neighborhood of Tel Aviv by the entry facade, which is made of white concrete and matte stucco. The entry facade is perforated by vertical openings and horizontal slits that reveal the indoor-outdoor nature of the home that is located within. On the interior of the home, the glass surface of the black core reflects pictures of the surrounding scenery, which helps to reinforce the concept of living in the natural environment. One of the unifying qualities that is repeated in the interior design and architecture of the building envelope is the basic clarity of contrasting surfaces. These surfaces may be either glossy and matte or black and white. The residence is an embodiment of Irit Axelrod’s contemporary visual language, which is inspired by a wide variety of foreign styles and Bauhaus structures that can be seen in contemporary Tel Aviv.
