The next international bologna children’s book festival, which is scheduled to take place from March 25-28, will once again welcome children’s books from all over the world. This year marks the show’s 50th anniversary. This year, there are 1200 exhibitors from 66 different countries who have registered to take part in the fair. These exhibitors will display their books, which include picture books, illustrated books, activity books, chapter books, young adult novels, educational books, encyclopaedias, graphic novels, e-books, and apps. Moreover, the list is always growing as technological advancements continue to discover new methods to transport the written word. In spite of the fact that we are making steady progress in the field of writing for young adults in India, the market for children’s storybooks has, for some reason, remained a challenging terrain to traverse. Throughout the rest of the globe, particularly in the western world, the role that the picture book plays in the life of a kid is not only substantial, but it also seems to be nearly obligatory. Over the course of India’s history as a country and culture, picture books have never had any place of importance. During our early childhood, we participated in activities like as games, festivals, cuisine, and song and dance; nevertheless, reading to us was never a significant element of our development as children. Possibly one of the reasons for this is the quantity of tales, whether they were true or imagined, that were present in every home and were passed down from generation to generation within the family. The purpose of telling tales to very young children was often to divert their attention and persuade them to eat or sleep, rather than to provide them with amusement or intellectual stimulation. The youngster did not become familiar with literature until after she had started attending school. The children’s textbooks were the first printed tales that the youngster had encountered in a printed form. As a result of this, there was never a need in the market for books that featured lavish artwork or storylines in which the visuals spoke more than the words. There was something that provided a little bit of break to the monotony of the page, and that was art or images. Writing did not get any favor either, regardless of how little attention was paid to art. The majority of the tales told to children were retold versions of folktales or were taken from the Panchatantra and the Jataka. Where is the acknowledgement now? It seems that the same skill does not seem to pour over into the realm of children’s literature, despite the fact that Indian writing in English has rapidly gained traction both domestically and internationally. On the other hand, there are no prizes that are given out for children’s writing or artwork, and the one and only crossword book award manages to include the whole spectrum of children’s literature, from picture books to novels for young adults. In view of shifting societal norms, with families becoming smaller and even grandparents having to hurry out to work, it is imperative that children have access to high-quality illustrated books in order to satisfy their need for being told tales. Over the course of the last fifteen years, a select few publishers have acknowledged this need and produced picture books that are both gorgeously drawn and thoughtfully constructed. Numerous publishers, including karadi stories, tara books, tinkling digest, and tulika, have ventured into this field with a daring and intriguing approach. Over the course of the past few years, Karadi Tales has successfully introduced its new line of picture books to the international market. This is in contrast to the fact that Tara has been awarded the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi award, in addition to a number of other awards, for their exquisite screen-printed artwork and handcrafted books. There are a great number of karadi tales books, kids story books, and Hindi panchatantra stories that have been included in the catalogue of exceptional novels that includes white ravens. It is impossible to understate the significance of a picture book in regard to the development of a young kid in today’s society. We are obligated to provide our children with books since there is no existing atmosphere that is conducive to the telling of stories. A talent that is just as crucial as reading words is the ability to read visuals. A beautiful tale book is both a medium for conveying stories and a piece of art in its own right. It imparts knowledge without being blatantly preachy, and it has the enchantment of giving you a fresh narrative each time you read it. When it comes to teaching a youngster to appreciate art and aesthetics, there is no strategy that is more effective than introducing her to picture books. In point of fact, there is no more effective method of instructing an adult! “Picture books have the potential to captivate your heart and alter your spirit,” says Joyce Wan, who is both a novelist and an artist.
