Written by Sandi Hunter At a close friend’s burial recently, I overheard someone mention that she will be remembered in our hearts and on her Facebook profile. Some of us on that day were comforted by the presence of Isabella’s Facebook profile, which still had recent postings, giving the impression that she was still alive. Later that day, I pondered the profound impact that technology and the internet have had on our lives in a very little period, with even greater advancements on the horizon that beyond our current expectations. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter facilitate connections in unprecedented ways. Through these websites, we learn more about individuals than we ever did in the past. Online, individuals share their activities, whereabouts, personal information, images, and more. Individuals are often inclined to provide personal information that may have been previously unknown or kept private. Computers, once associated with nerds and socially uncomfortable individuals, have evolved into a potent tool for global connectivity and societal transformation via the internet. However, there are other advantages that modern technology provides, which go beyond just communicating with others via Facebook and Twitter. Mobile apps enable individuals to engage in their preferred internet activities conveniently using their phone or iPad. While waiting in a lengthy queue at the grocery store, I saw that 4 out of 10 individuals were vigorously tapping on their phones. I discreetly saw a few individuals engaging in activities such as browsing Twitter, Facebook, checking emails, reading news feeds, or sending text messages. Most individuals at an airport lounge are engrossed on their phones, paying little attention to the terminal’s surroundings. Technology is now intertwined with our everyday activities, no longer distinct. At any moment, we are all interconnected in a very intimate manner due to our phones and the internet. Despite the absence of physical touch, we still feel emotionally connected to our friends and loved ones. We can now do our business, pursue our hobbies, and maintain our relationships conveniently using our smartphones, no longer restricted to our home computers. Five years ago, my firm, Worldprofit, introduced the Live Business Center, a novel and interactive technology. We successfully streamed live video to our website audience. Visitors to our site were surprised to be greeted by a person on the screen. People were astounded and bewildered. Initially, they were unable to comprehend the identity of the speaker and the method by which communication was taking place. Today, after many years, individuals have become more at ease with engaging with their computers and phones. Facetime on the iPhone has greatly simplified the process of connecting in real-time with family and coworkers via live video calls. Webinars, previously obscure, are now prevalent. Online conferences and meetings provide convenience for participants, cost savings for companies, and are beneficial for the environment by reducing the need for travel. Today, Worldprofit provides a customized version of the live business center for our members to include into their own website. The technology enables businesses to interact with potential consumers in real-time by greeting visitors, answering inquiries, offering customer care, presenting deals, and finalizing purchases. The surge in home-based enterprises and entrepreneurs is a result of widespread unemployment and global uncertainty. The internet enables those working from home to have significant freedoms and opportunities to generate income via activities such as selling things, advertising affiliate marketing programs, blogging, providing web-based services, and more. With the global population exceeding 7 billion, I ponder how despite our increasing numbers, the internet has made the globe seem more interconnected and intimate. Technology has improved many aspects of our life. When individuals with similar beliefs get together, excellent – even exceptional thoughts are born. Technology may be the catalyst that brings us closer to addressing issues and discovering treatments for ailments. People-driven technology is revolutionizing our world, bringing about positive changes. Explore these tales and envision the future possibilities. In September of this year, a cohort of video game enthusiasts successfully resolved a complex chemical conundrum that had baffled experts for an extended period. Players achieved this by using a cooperative internet game known as Foldit. Foldit is a computer game that allows users to participate in significant scientific research. The emphasis area is proteins and their folding process. Proteins are ubiquitous in all organisms and have a role in illnesses including cancer, AIDS, and Alzheimer’s. According to Foldit, they are gathering data to see whether humans’ pattern-recognition and puzzle-solving skills are more effective than current computer systems in pattern-folding activities. If this is confirmed, we can instruct computers in human tactics and accelerate protein folding significantly! Over 236,000 people have signed up for the game, providing a substantial amount of combined intellectual capacity to tackle challenges and a vast and expanding pool of information to use. This indicates that opportunities have arisen to explore collective solutions to long-standing issues such as AIDS and other illnesses that have affected humanity. The New York Times presented readers with a real-life medical puzzle to solve. Readers were provided with essential information about an ailment and were prompted to identify the issue. 300 readers answered, and a right diagnosis was given within the first 30 minutes of publication, with many more correct replies following. Consider the consequences of shared knowledge? A collaborative group of intelligent individuals from across the world working together to solve challenges. When brilliant technology innovators get together for their own personal goals, the unintended outcome of their cooperation often results in advantages for all of mankind. Google’s Peter Norvig and Microsoft’s Eric Horvitz recently convened to deliberate about artificial intelligence. Although these two corporations are strong rivals in the economic world, they both acknowledge the significance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of technology. Both of these innovative individuals openly discussed how machine-learning methods have progressed by processing vast amounts of data to decipher text or convert voice into written form. Users of the new iPhone 4S are aware that Siri, the voice-activated assistant, is now available, but this is only the start. Data, large quantities of data represent information. Acquiring information is empowering. The future is really thrilling! Consider the widespread benefits that will result from the emergence of new technologies capable of extracting particular data to solve various issues such as reducing traffic congestion, providing accurate medical diagnoses, addressing oil spills, and advancing research and space exploration. There are no boundaries. Facebook was inadvertently an early social experiment. We are discovering that social media and aggregated data may play a crucial role in societal adaptation and survival.
