Taking on the Role of an Entrepreneur When Times Are Tough . This was a topic that came up in a conversation I was having not too long ago with another person. This individual has been dealing with the massive repercussions of COVID-related shutdowns for the past year, so it is easy to understand why they were in such a state of disarray. Their company had come to an unexpected and total halt as a result. It is hard to believe that it has already been a year since we were struck by this uncontrollable illness, which not only caused havoc in our personal life but also in our professional endeavors. Although I feel extremely fortunate that the firm that I work for, eVision Media, was not nearly as severely impacted as the person that I was speaking to, I could absolutely connect to what they were going through. Back then, some 20 years ago, I was also in a very low condition of hopeless despondency. During that time period, identity theft was just starting to rear its ugly head, and unfortunately for me, I was one of the first victims of this growing problem. Because it was so severe, law enforcement informed us that it was the worst case they had encountered to that point. It was so terrible that it brought an abrupt end to the rest of my existence. I was unable to do any job. I was unable to keep up with my bills. And to make matters even worse, I was powerless to stop it. I had the overwhelming sensation of being entirely alone, helpless, and powerless. Due to the fact that this was a relatively new type of crime, there were no standard operating protocols for law enforcement or the courts to follow. As a result, the whole thing ended up being a complete and utter farce. Excuse my lack of English! While Daniel and I waited for our lives to return to normal, the only thing we could do was wait helplessly and trust that the problem would be resolved as soon as possible. During this time, our credit cards reached their maximum limit, we were behind on our mortgage payments, and we were on the verge of facing foreclosure. It came to be such a problem that I remember standing in line at the supermarket on Christmas Eve with a knot in my stomach that wouldn’t stop gnawing. I was concerned that the Christmas dinner ingredients that I purchased, which included the smallest turkey we could find, potatoes, and vegetables, would not put a limit on our last credit card and cause it to be declined. I am thankful that I was able to use that credit card to make that one last purchase, which allowed me to provide a lovely meal for my family. However, that event served just to serve as further evidence of the overall truth of the issue. I gave in to a dark depression, during which time I stayed up until the early morning hours playing Tetris and then slept until the afternoon. I put on a significant amount of weight and felt like doing nothing except staying in bed. I fervently desired that the entire world would vanish. But one morning I awoke and knew exactly what I wanted to do. I came to the conclusion that enough was enough. I made a decision right then and there that I had two options: I could either continue to play the role of the victim and watch my life slide down the drain, or I could do something â anything â to pull myself out of this rut and get my life back on track. I’m not sure what prompted this unexpected realization, but I’ll be eternally happy that it occurred to me. I sprung out of bed and questioned my capability: What is there that I can do? After giving my few choices careful consideration, I came to the conclusion that one of the few chances I had was to go back to school and acquire a degree in business. In that way, I would be eligible to get student loans, which would assist me financially while I am in school. It was thanks to those student loans that I was able to pay my mortgage (along with the assistance from my father that thankfully kept us from going into foreclosure) and keep food on the table. During the time that I was completing my education, I also made an effort to go out and participate in a number of no-cost or low-cost networking events, which led to the acquisition of my initial customers. Some of those customers are still patrons of ours to this very day! I’d want to give a shout out to Linda Jane, Shar, Lori, and Jini. When we worked together in the past, you had no idea what I was going through, therefore it was an honor for me to have that opportunity. You have no idea how thankful I am for that. Therefore, the answer to your question is that I do, in fact, have some understanding of what you are going through if the epidemic has wreaked havoc on your life and your company in a level that was previously unthinkable. In addition, I am able to state without any shadow of a doubt that it is also feasible to triumph over this challenge. Making the decision to alter anything is the first step in the process. Make a decision regarding the nature of this change. And after that, make it a reality. We are resilient by nature because we are entrepreneurs. We have to find a way to get in touch with the energy that is buried deep inside us and draw forth the resources that will allow us to overcome obstacles and make things happen. A few days ago, I came across a proverb that I thought was particularly pertinent to this article. Regardless of how stymied you may feel Regardless of how difficult things are right now Regardless of how many days you’ve spent sobbing, regardless of how helpless and unhappy you feel, regardless of how many days you’ve spent wishing things were different, no matter how many days you’ve spent crying, no matter how many days you’ve spent… I assure you that you won’t always feel the way you do now. KEEP MOVING AHEAD Know that there are many people, like myself, who are going through the same thing that you are and that we are not alone in our understanding of what you are going through. Don’t try to tackle this challenge on your alone. Make an effort to connect with others and join groups in which members offer mutual assistance. I have included some of the ones that I am familiar with below. Take whatever steps are necessary to ensure your survival! I assure you that things will become better in the days to come.
