The people’s architectural firm in Shenzhen creates a modular house in order to successfully meet this specific need. In China, where land is solely owned by the government and the development of private dwellings is restricted to the very affluent, the people’s architectural office has devised a solution that they have dubbed the “plug-in tower.” In order to commemorate the first-ever design event hosted by vanke, which investigates a pressing architectural theme each year, the architects were invited by a real estate developer to tackle the “future of housing” through an experimental built work. In doing so, they addressed the troubling problem of the insecurity of private home ownership in the country. The plugin tower is a concept that is mostly dependent on pre-fabrication, modularity, and mobility. It is categorized as a temporary construction and is put at the headquarters of Vanke, which is located in Shenzhen. Therefore, it essentially eliminates the need for an underground foundation, which allows it to avoid the stringent planning permission that is required for permanent buildings and simplify the standards that must be met in order to construct a private residence. It eliminates the possibility of losing one’s property, which means that occupants are able to pack up their dwellings and take them with them in the event that they are ever required to transfer. As a result, it reduces the amount of money that is required to construct a permanent residence. to add insult to injury, the prefab system is built to accommodate many stories and is capable of unlimited expansion. Comprised of a steel space frame and a kit of elements that can be built in an infinite number of different configurations, the plugin tower was inspired by the metabolist movement. There are vacant bays inside the frame that are filled with living units. These bays may be adjusted and unplugged whenever it happens to be required. The units are manufactured using Pao’s patented plugin panel system, which consists of modules that combine insulation, wiring, plumbing, interior and external finishes into a single molded component. Integrated locks are used to secure the panels, and the panels themselves are meant to be simple enough for a couple of inexperienced individuals to install using just a hex wrench. Plugin panels, in contrast to shipping containers, make it possible to expand living areas without the need of heavy equipment and do not limit their plans to the form of a box. In this way, the homeowner is given the opportunity to experiment with shape and provide satisfaction to his inventive endeavors. It is recommended that the experimental constructed form that was finished in September 2016 be used as a flexible design alternative that is able to quickly adjust to changing situations and changing requirements.
