Ar. Sumesh Menon creates yet another unique hospitality “wow” by combining his love for materials with a flare that is harmonious with his enthusiasm. An architect named Sumesh Menon, who works for his own company, has an insatiable thirst for using various materials. His staff is always looking for novel material behavior, surface treatments, and newcomers to the market; they are also doing research and working on a wide variety of mock-ups. One of the primary reasons for this is that none of his projects, whether they are commercial or otherwise, have any resemblance to a trademark style. Or, should we say that – a harmonious combination of unexpected elements – characterizes his hallmark style? In his most recent hospitality endeavor, Mr. Baozi in the suburbs of Mumbai, Sumessh goes earthy with his personal favorite, natural materials. He also establishes the tone of the Asian gastropub by making extensive use of richly patterned exposed laterite facade, rustic cement-finish walls, exposed HVAC ducting, staggered limestone flooring, pinewood furniture, copper and mild steel wire mesh, and biophillic design elements and fittings in order to create a “raw earthy meets funky asian” atmosphere. An eight-seater in a tapering rotund, rope-hoisted semi-private arrangement grabs eyeballs. Guests are treated to cozy outdoor pergolas or high table settings, or they can even move indoors to tables for two’s and four’s. The seating is divided into formal and informal seating, and guests are treated to both. Right from the striking custom wooden door that is set within a multi-arched doorway to the imposing artwork that is influenced by Asian culture and scales an entire long wall; and the ethereal sculptural light fittings to the handmade tile-inlaid rubber-wood tables, the entire space is a splendid synthesis of patterns and textures that dominate the space while nonetheless appearing to be understated. The careful attention to detail is deftly applied to each and every nook and cranny without making the experience overpowering. Paintings that are bigger than life, Chinese inscriptions, and even frp masks are just some of the captivating works of art that have been donated to the revitalization of the walls by skilled artists. As is the case with all of his projects, there are a few distinctive characteristics that stand out: the peripheral wall is made of goa bricks laterite that have been sliced in a pattern; the cement blocks are lightweight and have red silicon joint spill-overs; and of course, there is an eight-seater! The architectural elements, particularly the very low hung beams that created narrow openings to the existing space, making it very plain and boxy, have now been replaced with new ms structural supports and carved into large, elegantly arched openings. This is in addition to the fact that the ambient interior has been carefully chiselled to create a warm vibe. One cannot help but be impressed by the fake leather booth seating, the antique mirror background, or even the croc finish custom stone bar countertop, not to mention the quirky calligraphic restroom signs! The unique lighting that sublimates the ‘wow’ element is sure to leave a lasting impression. Even though there is a lot of jazz playing, Mr. Baozi has a really relaxing atmosphere.
