Having an experience in Cardiff Bays Since the construction of the barrage in about the year 2000, Cardiff Bay has been a magnificent amenity for the people of Wales as well as tourists, and it is likely now the focal point of the principality. In place of the unsightly mud flats that were left exposed at every low tide at Bristol Channel, which is second only to the Bay of Fundy in terms of its tidal range, there is now a man-made lake that covers an area of 500 acres and eight miles of waterfront. I strongly encourage anyone who is going to be on vacation in this region of the world to pay a visit to the bay. It is not too difficult to get there from the central business district of Cardiff. “Relatively” easy is the word I choose since the routes that the Cardiff City Bus Service takes are not exactly simple to comprehend. My advice would be to take the number 6 “bendy” bus and get off at “the millennium center,” which will actually be located behind the millennium center. Alternatively, you could continue riding the bus until you reach the next stop, which will be “the lightship,” from which it is only a short walk to the center of the bay, which is mermaid quay. If you opt to exit the train at the first station, you will be walking by the Wales Millennium Centre, which is intended to be the focal point of the development. This dreadful structure does not correspond to any recognized architectural style, and the architect who constructed it ought to be made to live in a home that was designed by Le Corbusier. In addition to housing the National Assembly for Wales, which is the legislative body of the principality, the center also has a concert auditorium that serves as the performing space for the Welsh National Opera. Not only does it serve as a venue for well-known music bands, but it also hosts both modern and classic theater, and it also has restaurants and coffee shops. As soon as you leave the center, you will be able to reach Mermaid Quay by walking around or through the submerged area. This is where you can find all of the top restaurants and boutiques at your disposal. My personal favorite is definitely the bayside bistro, which not only has amazing cuisine but also has breathtaking views of the bay from its tables. Although several of these restaurants are of very good quality, my favorite is certainly the bayside brasserie. As you continue to travel down Mermaid Quay, you will eventually reach the pier, which provides breathtaking views of the water-borne activities that occurs in the bay, as well as techniquest, an educational science and discovery center that will be of particular interest to youngsters. Both the Norwegian church, which dates back to the early years of the previous century and is now used for arts venues, and the Doctor Who Experience, which features characters and souvenirs from the long-running British television science fiction program, of which one series was actually set in the bay, can be found on the opposite side of the bay. The Norwegian church dates back to the 1800s. If you wish to go to the Norwegian church and/or the doctor who experienced the accident, you have two options: you can either walk from the lightship stop or you may take the number 6 bendy-bus to the next stop after the lightship stop. They are not a very long distance away. One interesting fact is that the lightship has been transformed into a coffee shop. The stroll down the barrage to the locks that allow boats to enter and exit the Bristol Channel is a very enjoyable experience, and it may be much more so when there is a lot of activity in the harbor involving small ships. This is true even on days when the weather is great. (this trek should take at least an hour to complete.) Boat tours around the bay are, of course, available when the weather is pleasant, and for those who are looking for an even more thrilling experience, there is a high-speed boat tour. There is a section in my guidebook titled “corners of Wales and Monmouthshire” that is dedicated to the city of Cardiff Bay. My blog also has a number of photographs that I have taken of the bay.
