If one has a linear plot that is 20 feet by 200 feet, how does one go about designing a house that is spacious? An example of a house in Vancouver that features unique design ideas to generate space and tranquility is shown by Falken Reynolds Interiors… Falken Reynolds Interiors and Randy Bens Architect were hired by boutique builder Moosehead Contracting to design a family house that would be able to fit on a one-of-a-kind property that was 20 feet by 200 feet (6 meters by 60 meters), which is about equivalent to the size of a back lane. The group claims that the distinctive location of the 2,200 square feet (204 square meters) home served as a source of inspiration for them to approach the design process in a creative manner and visually generate extra space. According to Chad Falkenberg, principal of Falken Reynolds, “For instance, natural light was a major focus; therefore, we strategically placed eleven skylights to wash the walls with natural light and draw the eye into the room, thereby amplifying spaciousness using the technique of Atmospheric Perspective.” Cladding made of standing-seam metal highlights the strength and simplicity of the façade of the house, while a courtyard located in the middle of the building gives light to the center of the structure. Concealed storage in the internal corridors maximizes practicality. For example, the entrance hall contains storage for the mudroom, and a kids’ zone is acoustically separated from the main living rooms. The kitchen is outfitted with a large island that serves as the social core of the family. This choice was made to guarantee that the house is adequately prepared to accommodate a contemporary and dynamic family. The fresh color scheme of white and woods with Nordic tones helps to maintain the sensation of openness across the whole area. New LED technology, hardwood floors, linen curtains and bedding, and carefully selected fabrics for soft furnishings, in addition to handpicked furniture, all contribute to the creation of a style that Falken Reynolds refers to as Canadian Nordic. This style is characterized by distinct influences from Scandinavia, Japan, and the West Coast. The house has a color scheme that is understated, clean lines, and accents that are characteristic of the designers. These elements make the property stand out.
