With bright and whitewashed interiors, cafe fables projects an airy environment around a theme of books and stories that has been brought to life by interior designer minnie bhatt. The cafe is located in a residential area of Juhu, Mumbai, and its tagline is “cooking up stories.” The cafe’s goal is to bring the spirit of fables and the pleasure of reading through its atmosphere. Complete with teakwood windsor chairs with floral print cushions, chinaware on the walls, and vintage lamps dangling from the ceiling, the interiors and exteriors of the cafe appear to play on narrative visual imagery. This is evidenced by the presence of English fences with flower pots mounted on them. The outside wall is composed of windows of varying sizes and styles on one side, and a wire mesh fork with the term “fables” on the opposite side of the wall where the windows are located. In the space between the two, there is a little wooden door and a birdhouse that is stuffed with literature. In addition, there is a series of green pots that welcomes visitors into an atmosphere that is warm and peaceful. The outdoor part and the interior seating arrangement are separated from one another inside by draperies and glass that reaches from floor to ceiling. One further thing that contributes to this is the little wish well that is located at the entryway. It brings one back to the days when bedtime tales were told. While an artwork of a tricycle with reindeer antlers as handlebars transports one into a realm of fairytales, the design elements that are in tune with the concept include pages of old books that have yellowed and are gracing the length of one wall. One of the corners has a towering light that is constructed out of a stack of paperback books, while another corner features a rotary dial phone that is put on top of a book that is wrapped in leather. The use of lamp clusters that emit a warm yellow light, an eclectic mix of benches and chairs in pastel colors, cupboards and bookshelves, counters and tables made of merandi wood, and other elements that emphasize the vintage look and feel of the English culture are all elements that contribute to the overall effect. Creating a surreal atmosphere, the geometric patterns on the floor, which are in hues of green and white, offer a dramatic impact to the whole area. These patterns balance the otherwise neutral shell and furnishings, giving the floor a sense of balance. The atmosphere as a whole is, in point of fact, bizarre; it is subtle but unique… beautiful atmosphere reminiscent of a fairytale that transports one into the realm of fiction, among a bustle of activity and amazing things!
