One of the most profitable US businesses is Apple. With a profit of more than $55 billion, it came in second. There is no disputing the facts. They are also, in my opinion, among the smartest businesses, particularly at the time when Steve Jobs was still employed there. And I say that for a variety of factors. They have a great understanding of self-promotion and audience engagement. But they do it in a way that you probably don’t consider all that often, despite the fact that we see it in the media virtually every day. Consider the president of today. He especially enjoys calling people names to start disputes with them. For instances: Corrupt Hillary (Hillary Clinton) Teasing Ted (Ted Cruz) crooked Joe (Joe Biden) The irascible professor (Bernie Sanders) Is it amusing? Yes. Is everything here a mistake? No. He almost certainly understands what he’s doing completely, and it’s working. Trump may be considered foolish by some, but he certainly knows how to gain free publicity. He is a daily topic of conversation in the media. Since 2016, people haven’t stopped talking about him, whether they like him or not. In a less confrontational manner, Apple did the same thing by initiating a war with Windows computers. They ran a Get a Mac television ad campaign from 2006 to 2009. The entire purpose of the campaign was to humorously highlight the flaws in Windows PCs, portray the Mac as the superior option, and, in a way, shame you if you go for a Windows machine. Did it wind up being successful for them? Oh, yes. Their Mac sales grew tremendously. So have it in mind as you search for novel approaches to involve your audience.
