I’ve seen an intriguing tendency recently. I’ve been noticed that the advertising I see on Facebook, particularly the pictures, are different every time I go through my news feed. For instances: A lead generation strategy advertisement appeared in my feed with a simple overlay of lemons as the image. I saw a lot of advertisements with meme-based visuals. I’ve seen photos of lovely couples just posing at a beach or anything more recently. What is the one thing that all of these share? They are all unrelated to the cause they are advocating. Okay, it is accurate. But that’s not the response I have in mind. What’s the other item, exactly? They capture the eye. They distinguish themselves not only from the postings made by your friends and the groups you belong to, but also from the competing advertisements. But what difference does it make if the promotion itself has nothing to do with the image? In this instance, no. These companies merely employed surprising visuals to catch the attention of their target market, then allowed their ad copy and landing page handle the bulk of the work. Emails can now use this idea as well. How are you expected to get your reader’s attention with your emails in a world when spam and aggressive big business promotional emails clog up people’s inboxes? The solution is to stand out… Incredible, I know. Send your readers emails that break up their monotonous practice of ignoring or dumping blatantly commercial emails. Simply avoid using those words in your own subject lines if they frequently receive emails with subject lines like “% OFF” or “SALE.” Try utilizing plain text if the emails they’re receiving are jam-packed with images and color. You are not have to follow my advice, but the idea is to disrupt the cycle. And much of the email copywriting advice I provide in How to Become an Email Titan will assist you in breaking the mold of your readers’ inboxes.
