Jean-marie claude germain, the minister of the environment, and peter de clercq, the resident representative in haiti of the united nations development programme (undp), officially presented the “equator prize” to “mouvman peyizan 3e seksyon kanperen” (mp3k) yam producers, represented by its coordinator chavannes casséus, in recognition of the outstanding contribution of this peasants movement for the The “equator prize” is a collaboration that promotes local sustainable development solutions for people, the environment, and resilient communities. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Germain, claimed in his comments for the event that “The award is a testament to the quantity and quality of work done by our nation’s farmers and environmental watchdogs in far-flung parts of the country […] By awarding this Award, we want to recognize the steadfast efforts that Haitian farmers and other environmental defenders have put out over the years. By recognizing and praising mp3k, we want to encourage all of Haiti’s departments to follow its lead and work toward the common goal of protecting their people from the worst effects of climate change.” Peter de Clercq, for his part, has expressed his satisfaction at the fact that an organization which received funding from the development agency was able to win this prize “With the help of this prize, Haitian farmers are sending a strong message that they are able to contribute to the food self-sufficiency of their country, provided that the government provides them with the necessary support.
