A collection of moments and experiences are curated for travelers by the new international terminal building for the Guwahati airport, which was built by Design Forum International in collaboration with a team of fifteen design and consultancy organizations… At the altar of the land of the mighty Brahmaputra and Maa Kamakhya Devi, the new Integrated Terminal Building at Guwahati International Airport goes beyond the required complex functional demands of the aviation industry and creates an experience full of marvel and moments of fascination for every traveller. As the statue of the legendary Icarus, the figure from mythology who had the courage to fly, looms above the main entrance that is responsible for the departing drop down, a sensation of amazement and wonder takes over. Providing the terminal building with a prominent personality, the legendary monster is a representation of the human desire to fly at its most fundamental level. Origami is used as a tool and a guide in the process of conceiving the Icarus, as well as the facade, column cladding, and roof. This brings to mind childhood memories of flying paper aircraft and soaring into the skies. The signs and flooring patterns, which are all evocative of the art, physics, and sculpting that are distinctive of origami, take inspiration from and incorporate origami in their development. As one pulls in or out of the airport, tea gardens serve as a source of inspiration for landscape design and weave a story. They are positioned at the front yard alongside a water cascade, in order to provide visitors with the opportunity to experience the north-eastern tea estates right at the airport. Furthermore, in order to instill a sense of pride and belonging, the Namaskar atrium, which is a massive space with double heights, as well as the baggage claim, are adorned with walls that highlight the crafts of Assam. Additionally, modular aluminum panels are used to further explore origami forms. The retail arena effectively serves as a craft village, showcasing the various and varied crafts that are produced in India and fostering contact and trade among the people, craftsmen, and artisans that are there. The user’s retail and shopping experience is enhanced by the availability of the artisan village. Additionally, the arrival terminal provides comfort and relief to the weary travelers. As they disembark from the confines of the airplane and make their way to the baggage claim hall, they are greeted by an oasis of lush river basin rainforest that captivates their attention and provides them with the opportunity to rejuvenate themselves along the way. Both outdoor and interior gardens provide a variety of perspectives and marvels around every corner, in addition to providing the necessary level of green open space. After being incorporated into the experience design, the glass facade creates an atmosphere that is open and airy. GFRC accomplishes a faultless wrapping around the complex and expansive spans of the facade. Granite is used to maintain solidity, while zinc cladding and terracotta tiles lend character to the structure. The addition of terrazzo flooring and aluminum origami panels decorated with sintered stone for use as wall and column cladding brings an element of whimsy to the space. While the constructed form purposefully interweaves with the outdoors, photovoltaic panels that are placed above the parking lot create 500 KW of solar energy, the design, which is governed by the criteria of a four-star GRIHA certification, adopts a sustainable approach since it is environmentally conscientious. The building work that started on January 29, 2018, is expected to be finished by January 29, 2021, according to the timeline. Take a look at the pictures on the website indiaartndesign.com.
