It is the Strad Date: October 29, 2018 – Carmel, California Music from the Copland House is the internationally acclaimed touring ensemble-in-residence at Aaron Copland’s National Historic Landmark home near New York City. This home is an award-winning creative center for American music (http://www.coplandhouse.org/). Music from the Copland House is making their return to Chamber Music Monterey Bay after their last performance in April of 2007. Having been praised by The New York Times for “all the richness of its offerings” and “illuminating essential truths about music,” the Metropolitan Community Chorus (MCH) holds a unique position in this country as possibly the only American repertory ensemble that encompasses a wide range of musical styles. It takes a voyage spanning 150 years of our nation’s rich musical tradition, stretching back to the depths of the 19th century and forward to pieces that have just been finished. It does this by effectively bringing together the past and the present, as well as American and non-American musicians. Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, Yale University, and the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution are just few of the institutions that have commissioned MCH; there are many more. The ensemble has just started the tenth season of its popular main-stage concert series at the historic Merestead estate in New York’s lower Hudson Valley. The ensemble has recorded for Arabesque, Koch International, and Copland House Blend labels, and it has just begun an additional season of the series. A great lineup of award-winning founding, primary, and guest performers is included in both the live and recorded performances presented by the organization. The Metropolitan Community Hall (MCH) premieres and commissions a large number of new works, and it also presents a wide variety of educational and community outreach activities across the United States, including performances of works by Shostakovich, Puts, Lam, and Fauré. These endeavors are inspired by Michel Copland’s unrivaled and lifelong advocacy of American composers and their work. Going Forth by Day is a series of five looping digital “frescoes” that investigate many aspects of human life, including individualism, society, death, and rebirth. A multi-media component that is one of a kind will be included in the performance. Living Frescoes was an idea that was conceived by CMMB Artistic Director Emerita Amy Anderson. As part of a larger commissioning project called The Arc of Life, Living Frescoes was commissioned by Chamber Music Monterey Bay. Composers Christopher Theofanidis, Joan Tower, George Tsontakis, and Kevin Puts were commissioned to create works that were related somehow to Mr. Viola’s Going Forth by Day. The first performance of it took place on October 12, 2012, and was performed by Trio Solisti, which included clarinetist Jon Manasse in addition to violinist Maria Bachmann, cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach, and pianist Jon Klibonoff. In her capacity as a member of Music for Copland House, Ms. Gerlach will be performing Living Frescoes for the second time in Carmel.
