The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at 6:45 p.m., and will include pieces by Franz Schubert, Gyorgy Ligeti, and Maurice Ravel. A Conversation with Musicologist Kai Christiansen Prior to the Performance) This is Carmel’s Sunset Center. On September 28, 2018, in Carmel, California – According to The Guardian, “Extensive color palette, perfect mixing, and the feeling of joy that makes these serious performances so vivid” was the description of the performance. The Van Kuijk Quartet, a French ensemble who is on their first tour of the United States, will be the first group to perform during Chamber Music Monterey Bay’s magnificent 52nd performance season. The Van Kuijk Quartet is currently a member of the BBC New Generation Artists program. They have received numerous international accolades, including the Best Beethoven and Best Haydn Prizes at the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet competition, the First Prize and an Audience Award at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, and the honor of becoming laureates of the Aix-en-Provence Festival Academy. As of the 2017-2018 season, they have been added to the roster of the ECHO Rising Stars. It was their performance at the annual Chamber Music America convention in 2016 that completely won over the artistic advisers of CMMB. As a result, they “jumped the line” in order to be on the tour itinerary for the 2018-19 season. What a promising new string quartet to keep an eye on! Since their formation in 2012, the ensemble is already an established presence in major international venues, performing at the Wigmore Hall in London, Auditorium du Louvre and Salle Gaveau in Paris, Tonhalle in Zurich, Musikverein in Vienna, Berliner Philharmonie, Tivoli Concert Series in Denmark, Sage Gateshead, and at festivals in Cheltenham, Heidelberg, Lockenhaus, Davos, Verbier, Aix-en-Provence, Montpellier/Radio France, Evian, Auvers-sur-Oise, Stavanger (Norway), Concentus Moraviae (Czech Republic), Haydn/Esterházy in Fertod (Hungary), Eilat (Israel) and Canberra (Australia). It was during this season that the foursome made their first appearances in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Australia. During the previous season, they made appearances at The Frick Collection in New York, The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and Salle Bourgie in Montreal. Alpha Classics is the only label that the Quartet has ever recorded for. In the autumn of 2016, they issued their first CD, Mozart, which received a great deal of praise from music critics. This was followed by the publication of a disk of French music in the latter part of 2017. They are now studying alongside members of the Alban Berg, Artemis, and Hagen quartets while they are in residence at Proquartet in Paris. The Van Kuijk Quartet is currently in residency. As a result of the young musicians’ initial experiences as students of the Ysaye Quartet, they have also had the opportunity to collaborate with Gunter Pichler at the Escuela Superior de Mùsica Reina Sofia in Madrid. This endeavor has been made possible by the generous support of the International Institute of Chamber Music of Madrid. The quartet also takes part in international academies, such as the McGill International String Quartet Academy in Montreal, where they are accompanied by André Roy and Michael Tree of the Guarneri Quartet; the Weikersheim International Chamber Music Course, where they are accompanied by the Vogler Quartet and Heime Muller, who was formerly a member of the Artemis Quartet; and the renowned academies in Verbier and Aix-en-Provence. It is the Mécénat Musical Société Générale that is the primary sponsor of the Van Kuijk. NICOLAS VAN KUIJK, a violinist, SYLVAIN FAVRE-BULLE, a violinist, EMMANUEL FRANíOIS, a violist, and FRANíOIS ROBIN, a cellist, are listed as the artists. An organization known as Mécénat Musical Société Générale is the patron of the quartet. The pieces listed below are included in the evening’s performance schedule: The String Quartet No. 10 by Franz Schubert, composition number D 87 in E-flat Major Gyorgy Ligeti’s “Métamorphoses nocturnes” is the first string quartet he conducted. This is the String Quartet in F Major by Maurice Ravel.
