The State of the Art (SOTA) exhibition is an invitational show that covers a wide range of topics and offers an intriguing variety of work from famous photographers from Northern California. On November 2, 2018, the show will begin with a celebratory opening celebration that will take place during Santa Cruz’s First Friday, from five o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening. The exhibition will continue continuously until November 29, 2018. In addition, for the whole month of November, the gallery will be the location of a number of workshops and panel discussions that will focus on the SOTA show. In order to provide a new and more extensive audience with the opportunity to experience an exhibition by prominent Northern California artists who are investigating contemporary issues through the use of a wide variety of contemporary and historical mediums, such as digital imaging, wet plate collodian, platinum, and mixed media installations, the CPA is pleased to organize this exhibition. The artists include Binh Danh, whose powerful images on leaves and contemporary daguerreotypes have expanded the medium, Bob Kolbrener’s large scale gelatin silver prints, Robin Lasser and Adrienne Pao’s provocative Dress Tent series, Katherine Mayo’s large, expressive tintype portraits of Selma, Alabama residents, Sara Friedlander’s evocative mixed media ruminations on immigration, Jerry Takigawa’s striking imagery of his family’s World War II-era internment, and Huntington Witherill’s dynamic digital manipulation, among others. The CPA will also be hosting a digital printing workshop on Saturday, November 3, with Eric Joseph, Senior Vice President of Freestyle Photographic, who is a specialist in digital printing. This session will take place in addition to the exhibition. A panel discussion entitled “Breaking Boundaries” will be presented by the CPA after the workshop. The discussion will be moderated by Brian Taylor, the Executive Director of the CPA, who is a well-known photographer and educator. Wallace Baine, a well-liked former Santa Cruz Sentinel Arts Editor and freelance art writer, will also participate in the discussion. After that, on Wednesday, November 14, the community photography association (CPA) will be hosting a special event with the Honorable Sam Farr, a former long-time member of Congress, in order to recognize his achievements and support of the photographic arts in the Monterey Bay region. In conclusion, in order to supplement the exciting SOTA show, the CPA will be hosting an online competition that will be judged by Ann Hazel, Director of Radius Gallery in Santa Cruz, as well as Rick Murai, a photographer, educator, and Assistant Director of the CPA Organization. All individuals are encouraged to participate and compete for prizes of five hundred dollars. The website of the CPA will showcase all of the submissions, and our viewers from all around the world will be able to watch them. A presentation of prizes and a lecture by the jurors, both of which are expected to be entertaining and instructive, will take place on Saturday, November 17. At the R. Blitzer Gallery in Santa Cruz, we will be commemorating the State of the Art show and the Center for Photographic Art’s entry into the North Monterey Bay region with a month of pioneering photography and activities.
