zaha hadid architects kindly provided the information and photographs; photography by Jacopo spilimbergo At this year’s Salone del Mobile, the designer ar. zaha hadid will be launching four new devices, all of which blur the limits between abstraction and function… Ar. Zaha Hadid is continuously transforming into a variety of fluid forms, and this process seems virtually impossible to halt. zaha presented four new items for citco and one for sawaya & moroni at the most recent iteration of the salone del mobile in Milan. Working with stone, all three pieces for citco showcase the natural aspects of the material, its shine contributing to the overall aesthetic, while her chair design is a continuation of her work that was presented at the 2012 venice architectural biennale. tela is a shelf system that is distinguished by an intriguing dichotomy: the black granite that it is made of seems to lose its firmness as a result of the system’s extended cantilevers. The interlaced shelves seem to expand and unfold from a single surface in order to follow parallel trajectories. These shelves can be found at the center of the design, which serves as its structural core. The design takes use of the tremendous dynamic forces that cantilevered systems inevitably generate. The exploration of abstraction that can be seen throughout zaha’s repertoire is where the idea for the luna table originated. Her starting point is the smooth, clean surface of the tabletop; the established constant to which Zaha applies the forces that determine the table’s structure. The hard two-dimensional surface is transformed into the rigid three-dimensional space as a result of these forces, which investigate the link between planar and volume. These abstractions, which are expressed via the formal language of morphological connection, stretch below and extend to the earth, so reflecting the intrinsic connectedness that exists throughout all of zaha’s work. The fluid geometries of the luna table’s legs, which are made out of polished white carrara marble, break the customary separation between structure and skin. The forces that these fluid geometries generate are conveyed through the stone to affect the rigid plane of the tabletop. These tiny indentations inside this surface represent the materiality of the work, with the marble seeming to absorb a significant portion of the dynamic forces that determine the table’s structure, so generating functional bowls within the tabletop itself. The traditional wall fireplace has been given a new lease of life with the Calla. This design is made entirely out of black negro marquina marble, and it takes its inspiration from the apparent torsional forces that act between the surfaces of the interior and exterior of the fireplace. This design establishes the formal composition of the fireplace as a conversation between curvilinear geometries. The smooth, polished surface further represents the fluidity of the shape and fluctuations in the flame, and is influenced by the natural development systems of calla lily petals that gently radiate from a central stem. The inspiration for the design of the Manta Ray Duo came from the surface itself, which functions as an experimental field that is also capable of producing volume. Her investigation into architectural surfaces that are able to generate space and volume is a continuation of the work that she displayed at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2012. A lightweight shell is made for the cast-aluminum two-seat manta ray pair by gently folding the continuous surface to make a plastic, hugging form. The shell is in the shape of a double chair that is positioned side-by-side. The fluid, single surface models and unites as the twin-shell shape rises on its central axis to create an element of separation and support; an unusual armrest that is integral to the overall development of the form. This expression of the simplicity of its structure is integral to the overall development of the form. At the same time, one is able to make out the more sharply defined curves of the y-shaped structure that is located beneath the seat.
