A diverse material palette, including wood, fabric, weaves, ceramics, artworks, and decorative elements, is utilized in the home in order to create an inspired juxtaposition of color with vibrancy; traditionalism with contemporariness; indulgence with restraint. This allows the home to speak an eclectic language. A unifying thread that connects the design statement is the idea that he should respect and celebrate the history that his father left behind, and by extension, a feeling of Indianness. During the hurricane known as “Hud-hud,” which occurred six years ago, a tree fell, and all of the wood that is utilized in the house was obtained from that tree. The center well of the property was once a four-bedroom apartment; however, various walls have been removed in order to create the impression that the space is more open. As a result of the installation of glass barriers, one of the bedrooms, which is currently being used as a study, is transformed into a visually linked extension of the living space. An ancient wooden door frame with a four-panel shutter that is also adorned with bright Indian art is another element that contributes to the overall beauty. An area of expertise that Abin has is the ability to experiment with delivering transparency while yet retaining anonymity. The wall that connects his son’s bedroom to the dining room is punctuated by a wide antique window, which provides spatial connectedness while also maintaining seclusion when it is wanted. By removing the wall that separates the living area and the son’s bedroom and replacing it with a colorful paneled wall that also serves as cabinets for additional storage, the design is able to accommodate a greater degree of flexibility. This door offers an additional layer of mystery to the overall composition.
