It was designed in a way that responds to the history of the city as well as the harsh climate that is experienced in St. Petersburg, including the heavy snowfalls that are typical during the winter months. The spectacular new terminal roof is the major feature, having been designed by grimshaw architects in collaboration with ramboll and pascall + watson. It was formed from a series of 18m bays, which essentially operate as giant hoppers. The interior design of the new terminal mimics the outward design of the city, which is comprised of a network of islands and bridges, by having distinct zones that are physically separated from one another and linked by unique pathways. This focus is carried through into the overall design of the Airport City Master Plan. The emphasis here is placed on the sculpture-lined avenue that serves as the entrance to the airport. It is evocative of the broad avenues that are found in Saint Petersburg, and it ends in a vast plaza that has a succession of pavilions that depict the settings of Saint Petersburg in the past, the present, and the future. The open spatial arrangements are also similar to the various civic spaces that can be found in St. Petersburg, which highlights the airport’s position as the first and final major public space of the area for passengers who are flying. Mark Middleton, a partner in the Grimshaw project, said that “this building signals a point of departure for Grimshaw.” Our expressive architecture and meticulous attention to detail have earned us a well-deserved reputation. We wanted to preserve all of those features, such as their practicability and buildability, as well as our focus in sustainability, but at the same time, we wanted to make this building more about its shape and its space. In 2007, Grimshaw prevailed over a shortlist of the world’s finest architectural groups to claim victory in an international competition for the project. The first and second stages of the airport’s construction are moving toward a completion date of 2015. When it is done, the airport will have the capacity to handle 17 million people per year.
