The human race is now going through a period of unprecedented population growth. It is impossible for our planet to provide sufficient resources to support the seven billion and more people that now reside on it. Although I am only somewhat aware with the concept of exponential growth, it is possible that it is applicable to our circumstance. There is no way that we could ever aspire to introduce our civilization throughout the cosmos. In spite of the fact that the cosmos is limitless, the resources that are required to sustain human life are not. We only have a limited amount of resources accessible to us on Earth. My hypothesis, which is not truly my hypothesis, is that people have an erroneous perception of being deprived of something. Obviously, this is not true for all of us, but I believe it is reasonable to say that the majority of us can relate to this statement. I am aware of this sense of deficiency that I possess inside myself. Our spirits are being consumed by a sensation of emptiness that is concealed from view. To fill this void, we make a valiant effort to fill it with the joys and riches that come from tangible things. When we do this, the hole opens up larger, which means that we are compelled to feed it an increasing amount of food. When everything is said and done, we discover that our efforts have been in futile since a frantic sensation of want cannot be satisfied in this same manner. The biggest dread that mankind ever has is deprivation. The whole world is reflected in it. The Israelites of the Old Testament were driven to stockpile manna (a kind of food) despite the fact that their God had assured them that they would never be hungry. This crazy sensation of shortage was the driving force behind their behavior. The Israelites disregarded their God and held on to the manna for themselves. As time went by, the manna became bad. To what extent did people take away any lessons from this biblical lesson? It would seem not. What is the point at which enough is enough? To the extent that mankind believes it is lacking, there will never be sufficient resources. An advertisement that was shown on television a few months ago lends credence to my conviction that people in our culture have an unquenchable and unhealthy need for material possessions. The question “Who believes more is better than less?” is posed to a small group of youngsters in an advertisement for AT&T. The commercial includes a business expert. In response, a little girl says, “More is better than less because if there is more less things, then you would want to have some more.” This is a genuine statement from YouTube. Nevertheless, your parents will not let you to do so since there is only a little amount. If something is something that you genuinely like, you will want more of it. Following that, she states, “We want more. We want more of it.” There is yet another ad for AT&T in which the same experienced businessperson poses the question, “Is it preferable to be quicker than to be slow?” to a different set of youngsters. The signals that we are sending to our children are really regrettable. Be conscious of the fact that we are conveying this deleterious message to future generations. Would it be desirable for our grandkids and great-grandchildren to have an uneasy inner feeling of scarcity and a lack of resources? In the event that we continue to instill in our children this terrible message of deficiency, I can guarantee that there will be no great-grandchildren. For the sake of making this prediction, I will not be utilizing tea leaves. This is not a forecast, as a matter of fact. I am making this statement in light of the current state of the world economy and the phenomenon of global warming. When a vehicle is not properly maintained, it will only be able to stall and backfire for a certain amount of time until it eventually passes away in the middle of the street. At a pace that is beyond comprehension, we are depleting the resources that are still available on our magnificent world. Because of this erroneous perception of deprivation, we are destroying everything on this planet in an attempt to satisfy the void that is inside us. Is it really conceivable for us to satisfy our needs in the manner in which we are now approaching it? Obviously, that is not the case. We are under the mistaken impression that we are lacking. This erroneous assumption positions us to fail in our endeavors. An erroneous perception of deprivation is the root cause of all of the problems that beset contemporary society, including but not limited to stress, anxiety, mental disease, and addictions. The prevalence of anxiety and depression in our culture has reached such a high level that it is quite rare to come across an individual who does not use mood-altering medicines in order to treat these unneeded disorders. I am not going to describe why I feel that these harmful diseases would be caused by a sense of deficiency that is almost unconsciously present. I believe that it would be beneficial for my readers to give it some thought. Back in the 1980s, when I was growing up, everyone had the same goal: to become a billionaire. When the decade of the 1980s was in full swing, one million dollars was seen as an outrageous sum of money. The threshold has been increased to one billion dollars over the course of the last ten to twenty years. As of the previous year, Travie McCoy released a song that was titled “Billionaire.” “I want to be a millionaire, so fricking bad / Buy all of the things I never had,” is the verse that is most prominent in the song. This song was written by Travie McCoy, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The message that I am receiving is that the people of the globe should listen to this music and maybe understand it. Where do you draw the line?
