One of the most significant things you can do to boost your chances of finding a job is to do research and be informed of the other candidates in the market. In this context, there are two types of competition: other businesses operating in the same industry as you, and other people working in positions that are comparable to yours. Have a constant awareness of who they are and what they are doing. Make an effort to attain the goal of “knowing the competitors better than they know themselves.” With this, not only will you be able to take advantage of opportunities that others might not be aware of yet, but it will also significantly improve your competitiveness on a variety of different levels! Consider the following illustration to illustrate how essential it is to be “connected into” your rivals. For example, the president of a somewhat modest advertising firm is one of my clients. The clientele she serves is strong, the quality of her creative work is outstanding, and she earns a very respectable livelihood in her position. The fact that my client’s company is the envy of every small- to medium-sized agency in the city is, however, the thing that she is most proud of. It is not because of the creative awards that my client has won, nor is it because of how impressive her offices are, although both of these are certainly noteworthy accomplishments. They should make an effort to learn more about their rivals than they discover about themselves. She always appears to get the most prominent accounts and the most intriguing projects, which is the reason why my client is someone that everyone looks up to and admires. In addition to this, my customer has a remarkable talent for recruiting the most talented designers in the area to work with her. The other owners of agencies in the area do nothing except stand about and shake their heads in bewilderment and irritation throughout this time. They question themselves, “How does she manage to achieve that?” on a regular basis. To tell you the truth, it is not because the work that my client does is significantly superior to the work that is done by the other agencies. In contrast, the reason she continues to be successful over and over again is because the investigative research she conducts is superior to that of any of her rivals. She makes it her business to be aware of everything that is going on in her market, including what companies are doing what, which accounts are going to which agencies, who is working for whom, what challenges or trends are affecting local companies, and everything else that is going on. The fact of the matter is that my client is significantly more “plugged in” than the other competitors, and she has utilized this information to gain an advantage over them on multiple occasions. During the interview process, your competitive intelligence will serve as a differentiator between competitors. I am curious as to what this means for you. That you should begin to “research your way to success” is what it means there. Educate yourself by reading publications and websites related to your industry, trade magazines, your local business journal, the business section of your daily newspaper, businessweek, the Wall Street Journal, and other similar publications. besides the newsletters of associations, podcasts, and radio and television programs, you should also pay attention to other sources of “business intelligence” that are local, regional, and national in scope. Set up “alerts” in your web browsers and make sure you are following all of the information that is relevant to your field that is posted on social media. Begin to “connect the dots” and communicate your expertise, your ideas, and your value in terms that are pertinent to the current landscape of the business world. Establish connections with individuals, organizations, and businesses that you have read about and found interesting. You will be able to differentiate yourself from other candidates during the interviewing phase of your job search by utilizing your “competitive intelligence.” Your ability to “have your finger on the pulse” of your industry and the business market in your local area will also make you more appealing to potential employers and recruiters. You will feel more in control of the situation if you have a greater understanding of the competition. It would be ideal if you were able to move and shake along with the people who were moving and shaking. You should at least be aware of what they are thinking, what they are concerned about, and what opportunities they see in the future, even if you are unable to speak with them. You will have a greater sense of control over your job search and your entire career if you have a better understanding of the companies and individuals who are in competition with you.
