When the Corona virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China, the majority of the people in Jamaica laughed it off. However, ever since it arrived on Jamaican beaches, Jamaicans have seen it as a threat to their health. Concern and misunderstanding over the Corona virus have been growing in recent years. At the time that this article was being written, Jamaica had reported 605 confirmed instances of COVID-19. Of those 605, 405 had recovered, and 10 had passed away. The economy of not just Jamaica but also nations all over the globe has been utterly destroyed as a result of this worldwide epidemic, which has never been witnessed before in the history of the planet. According to projections made by the World Bank, the economy of Jamaica is expected to see a loss of 6.2 percent and a rise of 2 percent in the following year. This has dealt a significant blow to the economy of Jamaica. As a result of the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, the tourism industry in Jamaica has come to a complete and utter halt. This is especially challenging because tourism accounts for 34 percent of Jamaica’s gross domestic product. Now that planes have stopped flying and hotels have been closed, the foreign exchange in Jamaica has been significantly reduced. Additionally, the primary pipeline for foreign exchange has been shifted from the travel and tourism sector to the business process outsourcing sector, which includes call centers. However, even this sector has been slowed down significantly in response to the outbreak that occurred in Portmore, St. Catherine, of which 84 cases were confirmed to have originated from the Alorica call center. To what extent does this have an impact on Jamaica? Will the economy begin to pick up? Is the boundaries of the nation being opened up? In order to deal with the abrupt growth, what steps have been implemented? Since the majority of the population is according to the restrictions that the government has set in place, such as wearing a mask in public places, Jamaica has been able to weather a few hurricanes in the past and has the ability to bounce back from conditions that seem to be very difficult. As a result, I am of the opinion that Jamaica will recover, provided that both the government and the people do their duties responsibly. The manner in which the government responds to the issue will be a factor that will be relevant to the economy. jamaica was on a slow but steady rise however the situation has caused the government to go back to the imf (international monetary fund) to borrow a whopping 520 million usd in order to help citizens cope with pandemic but in spite of that it goes without saying that the government will eventually allow everyone to go back to work Proof of this is the fact that schools have just recently reopened, and airports and sea ports are scheduled to reopen for international travel on the 15th of June. This indicates that the economy will be able to recover gradually but surely. However, it is hoped that this recent situation has demonstrated to the government that it cannot simply rely on tourism as its primary source of income because it is essentially waiting for someone else to give you money. According to what was said before, the government has planned for both seaports and airports to reopen on June 15th. In light of this, what precautions has the government taken to ensure that this scheduled event occurs? Every single person who is going to be passing through the airport is expected to go through a health check, and wearing a mask is an absolute must. Additionally, the Ministry of Health has implemented procedures to ensure that there is an increase in the amount of cleaning and sanitizing that takes place in high-touch areas and toilets. The ticket counters have also been outfitted with plexiglass for further protection. It is also necessary for everyone to maintain a physical distance from one another, and there has been a designated place for those who exhibit signs of the virus to be isolated. In addition, the ministry has implemented tracking procedures in the event that individuals are found to be infected with the virus. The Corona virus is an illness that is seen around once per century, and while there has never been a circumstance exactly similar to this one before, there has been no antecedent for it. As a result, the government has been able to see the shortcomings of their system, and it is now up to them to make changes inside themselves in order to not only survive this pandemic but also emerge more resilient.
