Information and photographs are provided courtesy of Schmidt Hammer lassen Architects. schmidt hammer lassen architects have once again established a foundation for an international winning submission for yet another educational facility. This demonstrates yet another forward-thinking route that promotes a new style of teaching and learning. The new school facility on the island is a sustainable learning environment that has state-of-the-art amenities to enable optimum learning settings. It is spread out across an area of square meters. The entry that won the first award at the international competition was designed by danish schmidt hammer lassen architects and hong kong-based thomas chow architects. It proposes a significant visual connection between the site and the green mountain landscape, the hong kong city skyline, and the waterfront. The interior operations of the building are arranged around a learning plaza, which extends across the primary entrance level of the institution and links to the atrium. This process begins from the inside and works its way outward. The atrium serves as an informal social gathering spot for the students, allowing them to connect and engage with one another thanks to its balconies, hanging plants, and gardens. Shade is cast where it’s required thanks to the design of the structure, which has cantilevered facades. In other parts of the building, the facade has been designed to tilt backward so that natural light may enter the classrooms without leading to an increase in temperature. The gardens and other vegetation serve to keep the building at a comfortable temperature and contribute to a positive interior climate as well as an overall positive learning environment. In consequence, the atrium generates favorable lighting conditions, which in turn reduces the amount of artificial light that is needed within the structure. Classrooms are intended to be adaptable learning environments that may be organized in a variety of different ways to accommodate a wide range of different types of learning scenarios. The rooms are able to be opened up to link with other areas of the school as well as closed off into more intimate settings. The proposed layout has a strong connection to the local community, going above and beyond the role of an educational institute, with sports and cultural facilities that can be used by the public outside of the normal opening hours of the school. This goes beyond the role of an educational institute. Given the success of institutional design by schmidt hammer lassen architects with projects such as the riba award-winning city of westminster college in london, the thor heyerdahl college in norway, and the ibc innovation factory in denmark, amongst others, the new island school in hong kong promises to be another clear-cut winner.
