Paradoxes come together in our surroundings to form a whole. ‘The Flying Mosque’ is an artistic work constructed of lace that breaks the borders of social, behavioral, and cultural idioms. Choi+Shine Architects play on this fusion to create this installation. Choi+Shine Architects continue their investigation of lace and its metaphorical application as they design for the 20th Islamic Arts Festival in Sharjah. The festival’s theme is “Impact,” and the architects are working on the festival’s design. As a result of conceptualizing a variety of independent elements crocheted to depict common patterns that people find interesting and engaging, they have created the Flying Mosque, which, when viewed along a single visual axis, completes the imagery to constitute a mosque. This mosque will be the focus of everyone’s attention until the 23rd of January, 2018. The Flying Mosque lace is crocheted in geometric forms, which employs a design language that is universal across cultures. This language is repeated with the intention of composing designs that are used in both the east and the west. The usage of geometric patterns, on the other hand, is exclusive and absolute in this proposal, which is reminiscent of Islamic architecture. On the other hand, the minimalistic approach to the shapes and the abstraction of the surface treatment are drawn from modern western design. With the help of this initiative, we want to create a connection between modernity and tradition, as well as blur the line between the east and the west. The peaceful effect of the expression, which is represented in its repeated, ordered, and unified pattern, causes a contemplative sense in the viewers, taking them into the depths of abstraction. The expression is a representation of infinite. According to Dobree, who was cited in Briggs (1924, page 175), this project “strives, not to concentrate the attention upon any definite object, but to diffuse them so that the viewers can bemuse themselves in the maze of regular patterning that confronts them, and free their minds from all connection with bodily and earthly matters.” This is an explanation of the impact that Arabesque art has had. While the holes in the surface produce patterns of light against the sky, ocean, and city, the lace itself creates a juxtaposition of a porous surface on distinct visual planes. The lace is a symbol that binds together a variety of people and cultures. Through the use of a visual filter, it is hoped that viewers will be able to receive a new glimpse of the familiar scene, therefore rediscovering their city and the surrounding area. In general, lace is of a tiny size and is often worn in intimate settings. It creates a visual impact that is unexpected and memorable when it is displayed in a public place. The hand crocheted fabric shells are made of marine grade double braided polyester cord, and they are illuminated by multiple spot lights, which leads to the formation of a glowing structure that is evenly lit. Visitors are able to meander between and between each shape, occupy the volumes and touch their surfaces, explore and engage with the meticulous hand work, due to the fact that the collection of forms looks to be floating and is not disturbed by each other. When a spectator aligns themselves with the core axis arrangement of these shapes, the collective composition undergoes a transformation, becoming clearly recognizable as a coherent whole – a mosque that is hovering in the air. Shadow patterns are created by the kinetic motion of the sculptural shapes as they swing and spin in response to the wind. One of the elements that adds to the lyrical quality of the work is the repeating movement of the floating figures, which is both rhythmic and pleasing to the eye. For the spectators, the sight of the shimmering and floating giant lace formations against the towering buildings and black ocean produces a sensation of enchantment as if time has stopped, which causes them to pause and look. One of the most recognized buildings in the Muslim world is shown shining and taking a flight into the sky as part of this project, which places an emphasis on the meditative process of discovering the entire while also presenting a new way of looking at the old and familiar.
