Gayatri Mehta, an artist, extracts the social significance of the lines written by Kabir, a poet and saint who lived in the 15th century, and then translates them into colorful compositions that reflect the current socio-economic ethos… It is common for people to have a connection with Kabir on a deeper religious level. It is interesting to note that the artist, who has been captivated by his couplets (dohas) and poems (pads) and has studied his works in great detail, makes an effort to initiate a conversation or even an introverted monologue with herself by translating certain verses into vivid paintings and even installations. In today’s world, we are confronted with a multitude of problems, each of which is distinct, abundant, and multi-faceted. A setting that simultaneously pulls one towards a progressive lifestyle and offers numerous crutches to depend on is one that embraces art that connects with the sublime. This is particularly true for those who are looking for fulfillment and inner peace. Moreover, in light of the fact that an increasing number of art enthusiasts are searching for significant artworks that are suited to conversational or narrative tones, a piece of artwork that resonates with a sense of spiritual fervour may be considered a kind of lifestyle statement. When it comes to the works, Gayatri is certain that the more she investigates Kabir, the more she is able to comprehend how the knowledge of the past may be applied to the ongoing condition of dissatisfaction that exists now. Therefore, the images bring to life verses such as “do patan ke beech mein sabut bacha na koi,” “chhattis naubat baajti, chautis bajte raag, woh mandir suna pada,” and “jaranehara bhi mara, mua jaravanhar…” that serve as a reflection of the society of the current day. In addition, the artist plays with the underlying romanticism of his lyrics by transforming the well-known poem “dhai aakhar prem ka, pade so pandit hoye” into two compelling paintings in which desire reigns supreme. As the most important factor in determining one’s level of success, the idea that a passionate reaction to one’s profession and dealings in life is the ultimate truth and exceeds all else is a very significant one. Art has always been able to convey a message. Ever since the beginning of time, art has served as a social language that has linked with the public in order to communicate significant ideas and bring about effectual change. It is the most notable aspect of this series because, despite the fact that the fundamental idea is to reawaken the inner being that is inside each of us, searching for the ultimate sublimity that lies within, the works do not include any preachy content. The graphics provide an interesting reflection on societal issues, are pleasing to the eye, and create a connection with the spectator, creating the possibility that they will wish to appreciate them even if they do not include any spiritual content. Creating a lighthearted inclusion in the series is, in fact, a wry take on the phrase “bura jo dekhan main chala, bura na miliyo koi…” in the form of an interactive installation. In this installation, one puts their face through a gaping hole, becoming a part of the art; either ponders for a while on the message or treats it as a moment of frolic – as a selfie-point – only to ponder on it at leisure. An exhibition of the series is being held by Gayatri Mehta at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai from February 6th to February 12th, 2018.
