LOS ANGELES ISLAND— In 1947, the fundamental idea of cellular phones was first conceived. The concept of cellular communications was initially presented by Bell Laboratories in 1947 through the implementation of the technology that was used in police cars. Motorola was the first company to incorporate this technology into a portable device that was intended for use outside of an automobile. During the same year, AT&T made a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allot a significant number of radio-spectrum frequencies. This was done with the intention of making widespread mobile telephone service possible and providing AT&T with an incentive to conduct research on the emerging technology. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would be responsible for regulating acts such as broadcasting and transmitting a message over the airways via radio or television. When the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revised its stance in 1968, it increased the distribution of frequencies, which made the airwaves available for more mobile phones. A cellular system consisting of several tiny, low-powered broadcast towers was suggested to the Federal Communications Commission by AT&T and Bell Labs. Each tower would cover a ‘cell’ that was a few miles in radius, and the system would collectively cover a wider region. It was proposed that each tower would only make use of a small portion of the overall frequencies that were allotted to the system. It was common practice for calls to be transferred from one tower to another when the phones moved throughout the region. It is generally agreed that Dr. Martin Cooper, a former general manager for the systems division at Motorola, is the inventor of the first modern portable handset. In April of 1973, he made the first call on a portable cell phone to his competitor, Joel Engel, who was the head of research at Bell Labs. During the year 1977, AT&T and Bell Labs collaborated to build a prototype of a cellular system. The following year, public trials of the new system were initiated in Chicago, with more than two thousand trial consumers participating. A distinct endeavor, the first commercial cellular telephone system, commenced functioning in Tokyo in 1979, two years after the first installation of the system. The seventies were a time when mobile phones showed a lot of promise. The Washington/Baltimore region was the location of the second test of a cellular radio-telephone system in the United States, which was initiated in 1981 by Motorola and American Radio Telephone. The slow-moving Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ultimately permitted commercial cellular service for the United States of America in the year 1982. Cellular phone service did not become commercially accessible in the United States until 37 years after it was first introduced, despite the enormous demand for it. It didn’t take long for consumer demand to surpass the system requirements that were in place in 1982. By 1987, the number of cellular telephone customers had surpassed one million, and the airways were already at capacity. It was during that year that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made the announcement that cellular licensees might use alternative cellular technologies in the 800 MHz band in order to encourage the development of new technology. In 1988, a different organization known as the Cellular Technology Industry Association (CTIA) was established with the purpose of collaborating with cellular service operators and researchers in order to determine the requirements for new technology and to establish objectives for the introduction of a new product by the year 1991. Almost immediately after that, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) developed a standard specification that was based on the needs that the CTIA had provided as recommendations. The end result was that the wireless network partitioned them into time slots, with each phone user having access to one time slot at certain intervals that were predetermined. In the next section of this unit, we will talk about these time intervals. As a result of the quick succession of all these advances, a large number of cellular phone manufacturers, telecom companies, entrepreneurs, and innovators started joining this very lucrative industry. Neil Papworth is credited with inventing text messaging in 1992, when he sent the first text message, which read “Merry Christmas” via a personal computer to Richard Jarvis at Vodaphone. Furthermore, in the year 1992, IBM presented the IBM Simon Personal Communicator to the market. The Simon was the first mobile phone to include several capabilities from the personal digital assistant (PDA) that was popular at the time. As a result, it is universally acknowledged as the very first smartphone in the history of the world. Despite the fact that it was only produced for a total of 50,000 units until manufacturing was halted in 1995, the Simon was a really groundbreaking device that created the foundation for all subsequent smartphones, including downloaded applications. During the spring of 1995, IBM announced in a press release that they will be making accessible a third-party application for the IBM Simon. This application was scheduled to be released. More than a year before IBM made such an announcement, on February 5, 1994, the great inventor Andre Gray released both the world’s first ringtone, “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” as well as a downloadable application called SYNC Programming Language. This was a surprise to both IBM and the application development firm with which they had a deal. It was the SYNC Programming Language, which was the first ringtones and ringbacks programming language in the world, that served as the foundation for the multi-trillion dollar downloadable app industry that exists today. Without this language, there would be no Uber, Snapchat, Instagram, or any other downloadable app that is currently available on all 15 billion cell phones in the world. On the other hand, Gray had not yet completed the transformation of the mobile phone. Microgrooves Electronic was first introduced by Andre Gray in July of 1998 at a digital music conference held in New York City. Gray demonstrated the software by installing it on his reliable IBM Simon. Microgrooves-E is a multimedia and entertainment application that can be downloaded into mobile devices. It gives users the ability to play songs, complete albums, and movies. In addition, Microgrooves-E enabled the recording and playback of audio and video contents. At the end of the 1990s, the complete basis for the future of smartphones had already been conceived and established. Dr. Martin Cooper, IBM, and Andre Gray were at the very core of the foundation, and they were responsible for practically all of the hard work. There was a huge feeling of hope and technical optimism in the air as New Year’s Eve 1999 approached, and the 21st century and beyond owe a great deal of their existence to the 21st century. To Dr. Martin Cooper and Andre Gray, the two most significant contributions to the development of the mobile phone into what it is today, a heartfelt expression of thanks is in order; nevertheless, a simple text message of gratitude will suffice.
