Designer Parag Ainchwar, who works at Cluster One Creative Solutions Pvt. Ltd., provides us with a sneak look inside his recently renovated house in Pune, which is a place that successfully synthesises his design sensibility… We are welcomed into this 2600 square foot house by a painting depicting Lord Ganesha that is located on the door. Inside, an abundance of unique design elements creates an atmosphere that is cozy and personal. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Edison bulbs that are suspended from jute threads that are wrapped around the wire in the lobby of the entrance, the palette of bright yellow and gray in the living room, or the ebony and ivory in the kitchen; all of these elements are going to become characteristics of these areas. The house is expressive without being overbearing thanks to the fact that it takes into account the individuality of all of its inhabitants. Parag, who always adheres to an unrestricted palette and style (he calls it Design Tribalism), adopts this approach here as well. This approach is appropriate for the philosophy of a house, which is characterized by continuous expansion. With the goal of maximizing usefulness in every available area, there is an abundance of multi-functional niches and storage alternatives. It is the lighting that steals the show here, both in terms of the fixtures and in terms of the atmospheres that are created in the rooms. The house is open-concept and devoid of clutter, and the dining room has a floor-to-ceiling mirrored expanse that contributes to the impression that the space is far larger than it really is. The terrace acts as a natural extension to the dining area, making it possible to create a spill-over room with a view of the city and therefore extending the house toward the outside. This terrace is very special to Parag since it is where he begins his day and where he relaxes after a long and stressful day at work. It is the essence of a humble domicile, full to the brim with the colorful personalities of its occupants, much as the crossword arrangement of names that is displayed at the door of the home. Those Four Wonderful • What is the one attribute that you possess that has caused you to be so successful? Why? Infusion of design at the size of space as well as at the scale of objects, reacting to both the function and the desire of the user. • What is the one thing that you have done for yourself that you would never do for a customer or potential customer? Experiment with the specifics. • What is a significant design lesson that you choose to follow? Rather from being simplistic, design ought to be simple. • Is there a message that you would want to send to your customer via the use of your personal space? Yes. Defining the criteria at the beginning of the process and having faith in the designer need to be the defining characteristics of your path ahead.
