The new site of Studio PKA, which is situated inside the cultural and history zones of South Mumbai, enables the studio to adapt to its own requirements while simultaneously soaking up the collective creative identity of the city. Within his own personal space, Ar. Puran Kumar expresses his support for the philosophy that “less is more.” The Loft, as the studio is referred to informally, is his conscious effort to explore, live, and breathe the space. He does this in order to ensure that the process of peeling away layers and exposing the natural character of the space follows “simple acts of pausing, taking a couple of steps back and moving forward again – akin to a rhythmic staccato.” The Loft is housed in a building that dates back to the Victorian era and is one hundred years old. The raw is favored over the layered, the stark is favored over the garish, and the sensory wins out over the ostentatious… As a result of its location on the fourth floor, the studio has been stripped of its boarded fenestrations and is inundated with natural light, ventilation, and breathtaking vistas, which provoke emotional reactions from both staff and visitors alike. In the direction of the studio, the cafeteria, the principal’s chamber, the client zone, and the library, the formal articulation of spaces threads its way over the floor plate. The machine room that is located on top of the wooden elevator is framed by a formal conference room as well as a vertical vertical background. While the machinery, which serves as a metaphor for the studio space, is the powerhouse of the company, the clay tiles that cover the meeting room provide a reflection of the roof above. This serves as a mirror for the functional and formal arrangements that are present inside the space. A significant number of features that contribute to the spatial language of the studio include gabled roofs that intersect with one another and the structural supports that they provide. The purlins made of wood, the rafters, and the sturdy trusses that were covered in metal have all been taken down and repaired in order to bring the area back to its beautiful glory. In spite of the fact that the space is organized in a formal fashion, the windows and the stairs connect the different floors. The usage of cement blocks and boards is kept to a minimum; hollow metal parts and stone are used to complement various regions, and glass is used to infuse the design with transparency and depth. It is interesting to note that the studio is envisioned as a multifunctional and flexible design solution that can be used for collaborative sessions, workshops, and exhibitions. This will not only bring about a new discourse within the fraternity, but it will also bridge the gap between students and professionals. The workplace at Studio PKA is analogous to a poetic expression, in which the personality of the space mingles with the architectural journey of the company and refers to a voyage through time which involves remembering the past, living in the present, and looking forward to the future. One, two, and three: Experiments conducted by Studio PKA are built on the foundation of flexible spaces and designs that may serve several purposes. • The selection of materials, colors, and patterns is a deliberate process that is never arbitrary. • Style develops as a natural consequence of decisions rather than being the result of a unilateral decision made at the beginning.
