October 10, 2018, Salinas, California — This coming Sunday, June 10, at three o’clock in the afternoon, the Hartnell Community Choir will be performing their spring performance at the Church of the Wayfarer in Carmel. “Lux Aeterna” by Morten Lauridsen, “Dark Night of the Soul” and “Evening Prayer” by Ola Gjeilo, “Even When He is Silent” by Kim Arnesen, and “Alleluia Tropus” by Arvo Part are some of the pieces that the choir will play under the direction of Robin McKee Williams. Over the course of the concert, the Gabrielle Ensemble, which hails from the Monterey Peninsula, will serve as the guest orchestra. Singing members of the choir include both paid professionals and unpaid volunteers. The Hartnell Community Choir was once associated with Hartnell Community College; however, it has now transitioned into an autonomous group that has given performances in venues such as Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, Steinbeck Center, and local churches. She includes soloists and instrumentalists in order to fulfill her goal of enriching the community with beautiful music, while also showcasing local talent and other world-class musicians that she has met through her participation in the Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) mentoring program for conducting. All of this is accomplished by building upon the solid backbone of a small ensemble. This summer, the Hartnell Community Choir will perform in the Ely Cathedral under the direction of Dr. Craig Jessop, formerly of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. For the purpose of celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the armistice that ended World War 1, the choir was asked to perform at the Great Britain Choral Festival, which took place in Cambridgeshire, England. The choir will also participate in the Rome Choral Festival, which will take place at the Vatican in June of 2019. Krassen Karigiozov, a baritone, will begin the performance by performing “Nemicco della patria” by Andrea Chenier, with pianist Marina Thomas accompanying him. The New York City Opera, the San Jose Opera, and the Spoleto Opera Festival are just a few of the operatic companies that Professor Karigiozov has performed with. He was born in Bulgaria, and he has competed in and won international contests in the instrument of the piano and the voice. The song “En Sourdine” by Gabriel Faure will be performed by Kiril Havezov. A native of Bulgaria, Havezov has performed in a variety of roles on the stages of some of the most prominent opera houses in the country. In addition to making appearances as a regular guest soloist at the Sofia National Opera, he has also performed operatic parts in both the United States of America and China. Mezzo-soprano Veronica Jense is another one of the artists who will be included in this concert. She recently gave the world premiere of PQ Phan’s “Tale of Lady Thi Kinh” and sung parts in the staging of “Cosi fan tutte” by Peoria Symphony. Jody Lee, a soprano who was born in Canada but now resides on the Monterey Peninsula, is the main singer for John Tavenor’s composition “Song of the Angel.” “The Dark Night of the Soul” by Ola Gjeilo features the soprano Cora Franz, who hails from Baltimore, Maryland. Franz is the soloist for this piece. “Amour! Viens Aider” by C. Saint-Saens will be performed by Anna Yelizarova, who is a well-known opera vocalist from throughout the world. In addition to Astrid Huala, who plays the violin, John Wineglass, who plays the viola, Amy Anderson, who plays the cello, and Alesksey Klyusknik, who plays the bass, the Gabrielle Ensemble is headed by Eldar Hudiev, who is a violinist. In Ola Gjeilo’s composition “Evening Prayer,” Stewart Reynolds will be included as a saxophone player. George Peterson and Marina Thomas are the main pianists in this performance.
