Through the use of handmade wooden furniture from a bygone age, Studio TAB creates a modern home in Bangalore that is both upbeat and young in its appearance. There are several instances in which designers feel obliged to create a space around certain components. This may be ascribed to the preferences of the customer or to the designer’s own personal style. For this particular instance, studio TAB has done an excellent job of incorporating the client’s fondness for and emotional connection to a few classic pieces of furniture that they had kept with great affection for a considerable amount of time. Juxtaposing this predominant traditional feature with modern amenities to suit a contemporary lifestyle, this 2000 sq. ft. home follows a different process of design: each of the traditional furniture pieces was studied, after which a colour palette study was conducted to gauge the tones that work in sync with them. As a result of the nature of the brief, there was always the possibility that the furniture would seem out of place within a contemporary setting, or that the décor would be too ethnic, so dominating the relatively diminished dynamics of the flat. In light of this, it was essential to arrive at a compromise and locate the boundary, which serves as the point at which the space may coexist in peace. Moreover, harmony is the norm. A neutral palette of rustic grey micro-concrete flooring that echoes the finish on the walls in an open-plan arrangement serves as a backdrop for the cherished furniture that is displayed in the room. The entry foyer is characterized by a wooden batten ceiling, whereas the remainder of the residence is characterized by a fake ceiling, which is considered to be more modern than the batten ceiling. A jhoola with carved brass supports, a tree-of-life mural with a copper finish, and a contemporary screen with an antique coated-brass finish, as well as a linen closet that is completed with pieces of Kanchivaram silk, all stand out with aplomb. All of these elements are in harmony with the craftsmanship. The theme is maintained via the use of embroidered pillows, paisley-printed furniture, handcrafted Athangudi tiles, and a selection of vibrant colors. These elements are also reminiscent of postcards from India. When this is taken into consideration, it should not come as a surprise that the walls also have framed photos of contemporary superheroes and plush cartoon characters! We get the impression that the design of this house is as coherent as it can possibly be, despite the fact that the designer specifies that the rest of the pieces should be subdued in order to emphasize the excellent handmade furnishings. As you make your way through the two bedrooms, the living-dining space, the study, the entertainment zone, and the kitchen, you will notice that the atmosphere is maintained young and lively.
