December 26th, 2014, Turlock, California Over one hundred thousand eggs will be donated by Gemperle Family Farms and its affiliated businesses throughout the Christmas season, with the intention of helping people in need across Stanislaus County. Twenty charities in the central valley will benefit from the Christmas egg contributions, including the United Samaritans Foundation and Turlock Together. According to Steve Gemperle, President of the Gemperle Family Farms, “here at Gemperle Farms, we believe in working together to support local families and children who are in need.” “as a locally owned and operated family company, it is a part of our obligation to assist people out during these terrible economic times, particularly with unemployment being so high and food prices continuing to rise.” It’s not only during the holidays that families in Stanislaus County are having trouble making ends meet. This is an ongoing problem, as evidenced by the fact that 22 percent of families live below the poverty line, the unemployment rate is hovering around 10 percent, and nearly 30 percent of children live in poverty. According to gemperle, “stanislaus county is one of the poorest counties in the nation.” “our cooperation with the United Samaritans Cornerstone and turlock together is the foundation of our egg contributions, and it works to guarantee that people in need obtain nutritious meals,” said the organization. The United Samaritans Foundation was established in 1994 with ernie gemperle’s assistance. This group has made it a part of its goal to provide meals to those who are struggling financially. The United Samaritans Foundation will use the eggs from Gemperle Farms in order to provide emergency food kits to a total of 300 families. These boxes include nutritious pantry staples, such as fruit and vegetables, yogurt, and gemperle eggs, among other foods. On the evening before Christmas, the United Samaritan Society will use its fleet of mobile food trucks to provide holiday dinners to those in need. The executive director of the United Samaritans Foundation, Barbara Bawanan, said that “for some of these families, these fruits and vegetables would be the only fruits and vegetables they will eat for the month.” “Over eight million meals have been supplied by our company since 1994. We anticipate delivering 400,000 hot and cold sack lunches in just this one year alone.” According to bawanan, there are now 50 million individuals in the United States who are uncertain about the source of their next meal. This equates to one kid out of every four. “in our August study of those who used our mobile lunch program,” Bawanan added, “31 percent of those surveyed said that these meals were their only meal of the day.” “Gemperle Farms provides a weekly donation of 450 dozen eggs. Donations of eggs like these are an essential component of our lunch program. We would like to express our deep appreciation to the Gemperle Family Farms for their assistance.” In order to help out with the Turlock Together Christmas Baskets, the Gemperle Family Farms Donated 24,000 Eggs. On December 20th, 2,000 Christmas food baskets weighing 50 pounds each were distributed by turlock together, a volunteer organization comprised of local churches, companies, non-profit organizations, schools, and service groups. Each basket included both perishable and non-perishable items, such as gemperle eggs, milk, tortillas, chicken, canned goods, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pasta. Other examples are potatoes and sweet potatoes. A Christmas supper with a hot meal will be provided for an extra 800 individuals. At the Christmas meal, every kid less than 10 years old will be given a Christmas present as well as an opportunity to have their photo taken with Santa Claus. Turlock Together will bring hot Christmas dinners to folks who are unable to leave their homes. ernie gemperle, the patriarch of gemperle family farms, was one of the co-founders of the United Samaritans Foundation when it was created in 1994. ernie gemperle was also one of the co-founders of the Gemperle Family Foundation.
