Using public speaking to achieve success in both your professional and personal life Creating a presentation or speech and then rehearsing it to the point where it seems like second nature and you can’t stand hearing yourself talk anymore is not enough to produce a stellar performance in front of an audience. The actual creation of a speech starts a great deal earlier and is comprised of components that include things that represent the intricacies of both your ideas and your life. Anyone is capable of delivering a presentation or giving a speech. Even if it’s not particularly excellent, the vast majority of people can still make it through it. Think back on the presentations you’ve sat through, some of which you may have even slept off during. Even if the material was on a topic that first piqued your interest, the individual who delivered it was, how should we put this?, not exactly thrilling. The issue with the majority of speakers is that very few have advanced to a level beyond the fundamentals, which is referred to as starting public speaking. Even enrolling in a college class offers little to no improvement, since the majority of college courses focus only on teaching students the fundamentals of public speaking in a short amount of time with no professional competence. Let’s not kid ourselves, should we? I’m curious in the percentage of businesses that choose to employ people because they are or have the potential to be exceptionally excellent students. Professionals are wanted and needed by businesses. I’ve spent time in classrooms, and I’ve seen the kind of pupils that are successful in those settings. They aren’t horrible, but so much of what they are capable of is never shown. Wishful thinking on the part of the majority of the students, who simply want to finish the course with a passing mark and never have to deliver another speech again in their life. Even if there aren’t very many individuals who want to be professional public speakers, there are certain advanced tactics that may give people’s speeches more impact. There are various strategies that, if used properly, may pique the attention of a member of the audience who wasn’t very interested in the subject matter to begin with and lead them to learn something they had not previously considered. Perhaps they aren’t interested in play-dough, but with some forethought, preparation, and enthusiasm about the opportunities that the vast majority of people never consider, the speaker can rouse the audience, have them thinking about your words, and perhaps have them wondering how they can get some play-dough and conduct their own experiments after their children have gone to bed. Play-doh is similar to clay, and despite the fact that it smells delicious and looks appetizing, you should not put it in your mouth. The solution for the professional who simply wants to give a decent presentation to improve their career, make friends, persuade, make a sale, and improve their family communication without spending years learning a new skill is to stop learning and relearning the fundamentals of public speaking and instead move on to a more productive advanced skill level. The difficulty with most teachers of public speaking is that they don’t recognize how much more there is to teaching public speaking than what they actually teach their students. When done properly, public speaking encompasses all facets of the communication discipline and is an essential component of any career path, whether it be followed inside or outside of the classroom. Although speech accounts for just 7% of all human communication, it utilizes almost all, if not all, of the components as well as sections of other significant fields such as: psychology, art, history, sociology, science, language, and pretty much any other field you can think of. Subject identification, research methodologies, self-understanding, decision-making, coding, transmission, listening, receiving, decoding, analysis, knowledge production, planning, and delivering are all covered in public speaking. Evaluation at a number of different stages is essential and cannot be skipped over. Identifying, preparing, and delivering a presentation in such a way that it awakens audiences from a state of unconsciousness requires a great deal of consideration of a great deal of different factors. The majority of speakers are only capable of using basic speaking methods. If you want to be a well-rounded professional who is focused on personal development and boosting self-confidence as well as increasing personal and professional credibility, public speaking is an excellent skill to have in your arsenal.
