In melbourne, Australia, the ivanhoe grammar senior years and science center is built to have a circular layout that is mostly based on the school’s original master plan. This layout was chosen because it is more efficient. However, rather of duplicating the circular pattern inside, the designers decided to employ geometry and color to define the central courtyards, light wells, and learning areas. This was done rather than just copying the outside pattern. The outside of the building is shaped like a drum, and it has a spherical form and subdued tones, which creates a striking contrast with the inside, which has sharp angles and brilliant colors. The drum is ‘eroded’ at crucial entrance points to unveil the marvels of science and learning that are portrayed via this bright design. The WAN Color in Architecture Award recognizes and honors projects that employ color in such a way as to radically alter the appearance of a structure or to improve the experience of its occupants and the surrounding community. In addition, this award-winning standout makes use of color as the primary differentiator from the very beginning. mcbride charles ryan’s commitment to innovative solutions, technical excellence, and professionalism shines through in the way that the building’s language encapsulates contemporary methods for a well-rounded education. This idea was inspired by the concept of an eggshell hiding an inner core, as well as by kaleidoscopes, where a view inside reveals what appears to be an infinite number of color and pattern combinations. The architecture reacts quite well to its setting as a school building by incorporating both solemnity and lightheartedness into the design. The building’s outer, more traditional form symbolizes the order and certainty of knowledge, while the building’s inner, more expressive and complex world symbolizes the uncertainty of modern life and scientific understanding. This juxtaposition simultaneously endorses the necessity of wonder and imagination to see us through. First and foremost, the structure is contextually appropriate, since it allows for ample amounts of natural light. One of the members of the jury describes the structure as “it does look like an egg, and when you break it open, there’s this jewel of colors in the middle.” The members of the jury are in agreement that this project exemplifies the award’s aim to champion designs using color to create a more dynamic and communicative built environment.
