EMERGING INDIAN ARTISTS ON THE HORIZON

Five artists from Mumbai are putting their best work forward in preparation for an international exhibition that will take place as part of the India Pavilion at the Southbank Centre in London during the London Design Festival 2013… Rising talent is creating ripples on a wider footprint in an environment where modern fine art is recognized via strong names in high-profile art circles. Five of these artists, all of whom are connected in some way to the Pradarshak Gallery in Mumbai and who are members of a group known as ‘Friends of Pradarshak, ‘ have pooled their resources in order to present in the India Pavilion two paintings each that are representative of their body of work. These artists are eknath giram, sanjay raut, arun awasarmol, sangeeta babani, and ramesh deshmane. They are putting themselves up to constructive criticism. Eknathgiram communicates with a visual story of subdued colors and subtle tonal shifts that anoint the canvases with a depth of knowledge and add tangibility to the works of art. He uses Krishna and his stories as his core focus. His paintings depict the emotions, moments from Krishna’s life and times, or other imagery that is related with the story of Krishna. His paintings also reflect other images. His paintings have a figurative expressionist and semi-abstract approach. sangeetababani is certain in her view that there are no straightforward solutions, and that this ambiguity is what makes life beautiful; she honors this idea by filling her paintings with an abundance of vibrant color and intense feeling. Her paintings are characterized by an ambiguity, and at the same time, they have an impressionist quality to them. In addition, her paintings come to life with vivid colors and many concepts. When seen through a variety of lenses, interpretation might seem quite differently depending on the lens. The artist rejoices in her adventure into the unknown, while the viewer is free to continue on his or her own. After successfully weaving a narrative through his widely acclaimed series on balbhikshuks – monk children, the power of sanjay raut’s brush work is now experienced through a background that resembles a watermark. This background enhances the rich appeal of the large expressive eyes, blissfully happy faces, and corresponding yellow ochres, ultramarines, and oranges that adorn his paintings. This evolution has taken place over the course of many decades.
