For the purpose of creating a thriving city that acknowledges, in particular, the Ngaitahu history and locations of social and historical value, Schmidt Hammer Lenz architects are designing the new central library in New Zealand. During the recovery plan for the city of Christchurch, which was developed in response to the devastating earthquakes that occurred in 2010 and 2011, the new central library (ncl) is positioned as one of the cornerstone projects. There was significant damage to the former central library that was located on Gloucester Street, and the area that it stood on has been selected for the new convention center that will be constructed in the city. For the purpose of the recovery plan, the design idea is for a city that is more environmentally friendly, more easily accessible, and has a compact city center and a strong identity. Church Square is the most important civic place in the city of Christchurch, and the National Cathedral of London (NCL) site is located on the northern border of Cathedral Square. Because the National Centre for Learning (NCL) seeks to provide a visual and conceptual link to culturally important sites in the Canterbury environment and beyond, the position and orientation of the roof terraces and wide apertures have been directly influenced by this goal. A welcoming place, dynamically connected for discovery and learning, a fusion of spaces for every function, and equipped for every purpose are the four key themes that have been identified as being incorporated into the design of the library. These themes have been identified through extensive engagement with the public and stakeholders. In its capacity as the flagship of the Church Library Network, the New City Library will serve an essential civic purpose by acting as a social meeting place in the city that has been restored. Consequently, it will make digital technology and local cultural collections more accessible to the public. In addition to a study center, there will be exhibition and performance spaces, as well as indoor and outdoor areas for relaxation, as well as activities that will both amuse and educate young people. Incorporating three important components that are exponential to this culture, the library is created with strong allusions to the social and cultural traditions of the Ngaitahu indigenous people. an urban carpet, in which the ground floor of the National Convention Center is treated as a continuation of the public realm of the square, thereby creating a welcoming and informal entrance and contributing to the establishment of a strong connection between cathedral square, the National Convention Center, and the new convention center of the city. The elevator lobby, the reception area, the café, the conference rooms, and the department of technology and innovation will all be located on the ground level. A strong link is established between the community arena and the public space of cathedral square, which is a powerful expression of the community arena’s role as the city’s venue of discussion, debate, and celebration and the design. In order to emphasize the significance of this function and to place it in a more prominent location, the community arena is located between the ground floor and the pataka. In addition to that, it has the children and youth department as well as activity areas. It has a huge aperture that is glazed and faces the square in order to make it possible for library activities to be a part of and contribute to the lively atmosphere of the plaza. A knowledge repository that is elevated atop posts is represented by the pataka, which is the third sign for ngaitahu. As a result, the oceania floor and the bulk of the National Capitol Library’s contents, as well as reading rooms and a creative space, are contained inside these top three levels. The staggered atrium generates a dramatic vertical trip linking “mother earth with father sky,” on the other hand, the roof terraces and the western facade are oriented towards the distant vistas and the larger surroundings. The delineation of the Maltese cross is supported by the southern façade, which marks the northern limit of cathedral square. Materials that are closely connected to the nature and variety of colors of New Zealand have been included into the design of the library. An aura of authenticity and cultural acceptance will be reflected in the use of exposed concrete juxtaposed against warm wood, partially on floors and ceilings. Warm landscape colors will be used for the outside and the cladding of the pataka, which will be a tribute to the natural ambiance.
