Photography As the primary location of a family’s daytime leisure activities – both active and reposed – the boathouse is composed of a cedar dock, storage building for water-sport equipment, food servery, a seating pavilion, linear shade canopies, and floating docks and bridges. The boathouse and docking facility is designed by the Canadian architects weiss architecture and urbanism limited. The boathouse is located on an island that is scattered across the archipelago in Georgian Bay, Ontario. The architects at weiss architecture and urbanism limited designed the boathouse and docking facility as a way to make the most of its environments. The designers have put their confidence in the use of douglas-fir for the superstructure, taking into consideration the very cold weather that the location is prone to experiencing. In order to properly withstand the massive ice-upheavals that occur throughout the winter months, the traditional method of erecting sturdy fir and rock cribs for support has been employed. Because the natural resins in cedar are resistant to decay, it was selected as the material for both the deck and the boathouse. Skylights emphasize the natural wood finish that is used on the inside of the storage block, which gives the interiors a glowing appearance. Brackets that have been thoughtfully built are used to keep kayaks, canoes, bicycles, and windsurfing equipment in their proper positions and in order. a doorway that is extra-wide leads to an inclined slope that provides direct access to water resources. When the doors are open, the exteriors are completed in wood that has been stained black, which provides a fascinating contrast on the exterior. According to Kevin Weiss, the lead designer, the ideal material for the building was black-stained wood. This was because they wanted to construct a structure that was more “background” than “foreground,” taking into consideration the overpowering nature of the surrounding environment. Because of this, it is an intentional effort to make the landscape the primary experience, while the building serves solely to enable this credo, despite the fact that it articulates it in a variety of ways. There is a sitting pavilion that is constructed out of steel and covered with cedar and terne-coated copper. It is located at the very end of the dock. Through the use of a linear canopy constructed out of steel and canvas, which is so sleek that it almost blends in with its surroundings, it is linked to the servery and adjoins the storage space. The availability of sun loungers, seats in open air, and dining arrangements are all elements that contribute to the overall goal. The project seems to be the product of an effort to create a leisure paradise that is an appropriate response to the natural and cultural setting of the region.
