putting together by Pari Syal photography by Steve Montpetit; image courtesy of Blouin tardif Architecture-Environment Two cozy houses that perfectly describe their residents are the product of two different design approaches, two different locales, and two topographies that are comparable to one another. In order to get an understanding of their design sensibility, I will be speaking with Blouin tardif architecture-environment. The architects have designed homes that are not only warm and inviting, but also work in perfect harmony with the surroundings they are ensconced in. They have done this by rising to the challenge of working on two different blueprints, which are equally dissimilar in terms of requirements and sensibilities. Located near Sainte-Adèle, the panoramic home is a polished rendition of the traditional cottage. It has a pitched metal roof and dark-stained eastern cedar shingles. The house is situated on the edge of the forest, between a valley and a grassy marsh. A striking orange front door leads inside to the bedrooms and the garage, and an in-the-face stairway invites one up to the public areas (dining room, kitchen, living room, and porch) of the house. The house is based on a simple rectangular volume and sits on a site that is typically characteristic of Laurentian architecture. The public sections are thoughtfully designed to form a panoramic series that runs down the southeast side of the building and culminates with the porch. The cathedral ceiling serves as the highlight of this design. Within the expansive common area, there are two volumes that are finished in eastern cedar. The first volume has a steel fireplace, while the second volume includes practical rooms such as a kitchen, a pantry, and a restroom. On the other hand, the veranda house is a single-family home that is situated in a new woodland development in boucherville, which is located in Canada. The landscape design of this house is brilliantly helped by the fact that it is supposed to be modest and inconspicuous. The trees on the site serve as a privacy screen, and the only things that are exposed to the street side are the entry and some required amenities. The kitchen, dining room, and living room, all of which have double-height ceilings, are the three rooms that open out into the yard and serve as the house’s focal point. The ground level and the first floor are flush with one another, which results in a powerful indoor-outdoor dynamic. Large sliding doors, a continuous floor covering, and cedar ceilings all contribute to the inside having an experience that is reminiscent of being outside. This allows the interior and external to be seamlessly integrated. The selection of materials for the outside is simple and unobtrusive, consisting of local clay brick and cedar. For the second time, transparency is included into the design of the outside, notably with the glass barrier that surrounds the pool. The master bedroom is located on the second story, and it has a big covered terrace that looks like an aerie and faces the trees and the water below. Additionally, the bathroom that is attached to the master bedroom is transparent from the inside. With these recent achievements, the architects have shown their ability to carve out two separate niches in domestic building while maintaining a straightforward palette of materials and colors. They have also demonstrated that they have design sensitivities that are very discriminating. To see pictures of the homes that are featured on indiaartndesign.com, please click here.
