The exhibition is centered on the concept of “From the Earth, For the Earth,” and it will be shown in a pavilion that was built by UnStudio. The expo’s primary objective is to promote the sharing of horticultural knowledge, technological expertise, and cultural traditions, but it also strives to do so. Its design commission, which was awarded to UNStudio after it won a competition in 2011, combines expert knowledge of logistics, spatial organization, specialized typology, future flexible usability, function programming, facade intelligence, user comfort, and sustainability. The competition was held in 2011. “The architecture for the Theme Pavilion overflows and interacts with the surrounding nature,” says Ben van Berkel of UNStudio. “The Pavilion offers a unique experience for visitors.” Each pavilion building addresses a different part of the master plan by varying the inclination and terracing of its rooftops, and it offers panoramic views that extend far into the surrounding landscape. The pavilion buildings’ forms are a response to the nearby mountains, and their rooftops are carefully composed to act as plateaus. The phrase makes a reference to the idea that a structure may be made more accessible to the public and stimulate interaction amongst people. The architectural design gesture for the pavilion that spans 28,000 square meters was taken from the form of the Chinese rose, which is the city flower of Qingdao. This shape was then turned into the floor plan arrangement of the design. The center square, which serves as a “stage” for the visitors, is framed by its four pavilion volumes, also known as “petals,” which are linked by internal and exterior pathways. This square serves as a dynamic focal point that is surrounded by vistas that are located on varied elevations. Flowers in the spring, shade in the summer, fruits in the fall, and greens in the winter are some of the seasonal themes that are featured in the Theme Pavilion, which serves as the platform for monthly events that are organized and seasonal in nature. This color notion is also mirrored in the components of the facade, which are created from aluminum panels that are folded vertically. The four colors that make up the theme—green, yellow, orange, and blue—are applied along the lengths of the vertical folds, and depending on the perspective, they either emerge or vanish. As a result of the World Horticultural Expo 2014, the landscape art themed expo park will transform into a new site for eco-tourism. This will result in a change in the emphasis of Qingdao’s tourist industry from sightseeing to leisure. UNStudio, in collaboration with the organizers, has built a potential future lifespan into the design of the Theme Pavilion. This lifecycle allows for the structures to be transformed into a hotel facility that can also house teaching and conference facilities. As a result, the potential applications of the Theme Pavilion are included into the design process as part of the design process itself.
