In a duplex located in Bangalore, architects use their creative capacities to juggle space in order to create an urban atmosphere that is characterized by unexpected elements… with cities resembling concrete jungles and room sizes shrinking by the day; with balconies now a rare sight and typical layouts being replicated en masse, regardless of amenities and neighborhoods, the onus of the inward-looking home lies on reinventing interior design and décor; customizing it to the homeowners and their evolving lifestyle. This is because balconies are becoming increasingly uncommon. A duplex of this kind was recently created by architects between spaces, and it was located in the suburbs of Bangalore. They wanted their house to reflect their youthful and lively personalities while still being minimalist and free of clutter. The homeowners were a young urban couple who wanted their home to reflect their characteristics. As if on cue, the design delivers with an additional dash of timeless appeal and an efficiency that it draws from a limited material and color palette. Both of these elements contribute to effective design. Ingenuity in design mandates a configuration that connects the living area, which already has double heights, to the city outside via double-height windows, so enabling natural light to enter the space. By implementing smart civil adjustments, the kitchen is opened up to flow fluidly with the living-dining area, so assuring more space. On the other hand, the double-heighted entryway, which turned out to be a no-added-value proposition owing to its limited capacity, is shrunken in comparison to the standard height and a walk-in closet that was made at the top level utilizing this space. Moreover, its wall is pushed back towards the kitchen, which is just enough to make the entryway seem like it has a reasonable amount of space. As soon as one enters the apartment, an unusual design element is immediately noticeable. It is a blue wall and ceiling jamb that is covered in fabric. This jamb conceals the shoe cabinet and maintains its presence within the apartment by acting as paneling and also by painting the wall of the staircase. This eye-catching shade of teal blue is the ideal compliment to the eclectic chic aesthetic, and it is enhanced by the subtle traces of light brown teak veneer. Black veneer is the perfect mate for this color. The engineered walnut wood flooring draws attention to the expansiveness of the living and dining areas, while the gypsum fake ceiling with cove lighting serves to link the dining area with the open kitchen. Variation in the door sizes of the adjacent powder room and bedroom, which are concealed by the black veneer; or the glass partition that differentiates the walk-in wardrobe from the master bedroom; the use of chalkboard paint, tinted glass, quartz countertops; and the refurbishment of the staircase railing, which now features a mild-steel paint-finished railing with toughened glass with pinewood lining on top are all examples of ingenuity that can be found in the smaller touches around the house. Elegant in its innovative and muted approach, the house is the ideal canvas that fascinates as it awaits growth. The home’s minimalist palette, which is devoid of the expected colorful soft furnishings, brings the home to life in a way that is absolutely refreshing.
