When it comes to regular paint, moisture may often find a way to penetrate, but it is tough for water vapour to leave. Flaking or delamination of your paint will occur as a result of this. Substrates that contain a significant amount of moisture, or the layers that lie underneath your paint, have the potential to cause even the best quality paint to fail. Always choose a paint that allows air to pass through it while painting brickwork. It would be necessary for the paint to have a vapour permeability of at least 75 perms in order to do this. If the surface of the stonework that you are contemplating painting has a white flaky material on it, you cannot just scrape it off and then apply a layer of paint and expect it to survive. The appearance of this material, which is referred to as “efflorescence,” is a warning indication that you have an issue with moisture. The items made of masonry are very durable, but they also have a high porosity. During the process of moisture moving through the brickwork, it is able to take up minerals and carry them with it. As soon as this moisture reaches the outside surface of the brickwork, it evaporates, leaving behind all of the minerals that are present on the surface. This is the kind of circumstance in which you need to carefully seal the surface before painting it; otherwise, your paint work will not be able to withstand the test of time. Testing the moisture content of concrete may be done in a few different methods. When concrete is mixed, it creates a large amount of excess water, which allows it to flow into position. It is necessary for this additional moisture to dissipate before any fresh concrete surface can be coated. Utilizing calcium chloride as a testing agent is one method for concrete. The first thing you do is clean an area on the concrete, and then you make a note of the date and the hour. It is then necessary to use tape to secure the container of dry calcium chloride that has been pre-measured to the concrete. If this component is able to absorb more moisture, then the concrete will contain a greater amount of moisture. The fact that certain paint manufacturers will not back their warranties over specific levels is the reason why this is considered crucial. This technique of detecting moisture has a number of drawbacks, one of which is that it only measures the moisture that is concentrated on the surface of the concrete. The Relative Humidity test is yet another one of the more accurate methods for determining the amount of moisture present in concrete. The moisture levels deep inside the concrete are evaluated using this device. In order to begin this test, you will need to drill a hole that is at least forty percent of the thickness of the concrete. Following the completion of the cleaning process, a humidity sensor is inserted into the hole. Providing that the relative humidity in the hole is lower than 70 percent, you should be able to safely apply the coating to the concrete. When it comes to coating concrete, pH levels are another issue that should be understood. A pH value of 7 determines a neutral pH. Anything over that is alkaline and anything below 7 is acidic. To finish this test, a test patch is sanded down and cleaned in order to remove any previous coatings that may have been there. In order to guarantee that the concrete surface does not have a pH value that is too alkaline for the coating standards, you need first use a pH testing kit to assess the pH value of the concrete surface. Understanding the moisture level of the surface you are painting is critical to the endurance of your paint work.
