An historic home in Canada was reconstructed by Bourgeois Lechasseur architects, who followed the natural conversation that was already present with the materiality and setting of the building. The facade is articulated by a sequence of angles and large openings that are the ideal complement to the naturally curved Adstock area, which is located on the shores of Lake St. Francis. The plan adheres to the original footprint of the house, but it also includes additions to accommodate the expanding family and the requirements of the inmates. Throughout the process, the plan maintains its original philosophy of fostering a sense of connection with the natural environment and maintaining an open layout that faces the lake. As a result of its design, which is incorporated into the slope of the land and is in continual communication with the environment, the house, which is referred to as L’Accostée House, exudes a sense of warmth and friendliness. A terrace with a spa has been constructed on top of the footprint of the original home, and there are large steps that go down to the lake. This architectural gesture, which takes the shape of an agora in Greek residential typology or the aangan, also known as an indoor courtyard in Indian residential typology, serves as the cornerstone for the new home. Along with the open façade on the lakeshore, the discrete entry contributes to the creation of a powerful opposite. It is not the intention to disclose everything at once because of this. The expressiveness of the wooden framework of this modern home is what sets it apart from other housing options. The exposed beams that are shown inside continue to be displayed outside, highlighting the impact of transparency with regard to the lake. The roof overhang prevents the glass façade that faces south from being overheated during the summer months and assists the home in gradually revealing itself via its many levels. Around a huge island in the form of a U, the host extends a warm greeting to friends and family in an environment that is both welcoming and uniting. The master bedroom, which is situated on the top level and is separated from the living spaces, provides tranquil views of the cedars that are placed outside. The catwalk provides access to the children’s rooms, which are located on the higher floor. There is a light and dynamic staircase that connects the three floors; it goes along the wall made of red cedar and leads to the garden floor. A well-kept secret is revealed on this level, which is that there is an indoor swimming pool located in the center of the home. One must traverse the Paleolithic mosaic that is affixed to the walls of the shower in order to go to this location. At the end of the long pool, there is a wall that is illuminated by natural light, which beckons swimmers to come in. This concept is conceived as a volume that has been gently carved, and it is meant to blend in with the terrain of the site accordingly. The materials, which include sandy beige wood and red cedar slats, are more delicate and warm, in contrast to the formal movements, which are forceful and powerful. On the one hand, the created form is in a state of constant banter with its residents, while on the other hand, the view outside is just overwhelming!
